Few of my young blog readers wanted to know which one is better – ATMA or MAT. Therefore without any bias, I would like to put before you a comparative analysis between ATMA & MAT, so that you can form your own judgment.
At first let me begin by saying that management aspirants should begin their preparation for their management entrance exam taking a holistic view, rather than attempting only one particular exam. Why? Because management entrance exams are very competitive and you may not always get the best management institute. Therefore, you should at least try for the next best institute, by appearing in one more management entrance exam.
As you would see in the analysis below, when you prepare for the toughest management entrance exams (say CAT), you can always appear in any other entrance exam, without going for extra preparation. Why? Because pattern of almost all toughest management entrance exams are similar, as the comparison between the exam pattern of ATMA & MAT would show.
Comparison of exam sections between ATMA & MAT:
As you can see below, exam pattern of ATMA consists of Verbal Skills, Quantitative Skills, Analytical Reasoning sections.
Same sections also consists exam pattern of MAT, with Verbal Skills being called as Language Comprehension, Quantitative Skills being called as Mathematical Skills and Analytical Reasoning section broken up as Data Analysis & Sufficiency, Intelligence/Critical Reasoning. Besides these three common sections, there is an extra section in MAT: Indian and Global Environment.
Therefore, with same exam preparation, you can appear both in ATMA & MAT. This is also possible, because schedule of ATMA & MAT exams does not coincides as the following section would tell.
Comparison of exam schedule between ATMA & MAT:
ATMA is held only once a year, in the month of February. While MAT is held four times a year, in the months of February, May, September & December. More about the exam schedule of ATMA & MAT can be known from my previous blog posts:
MAT Exam: Notification, Eligibility & Forms
ATMA Exam: Notification, Eligibility & Forms
Therefore, as the schedule of ATMA & MAT exam does not clashes, (excepting MAT February exam which is held on the first Sunday of February which might clash with ATMA exam held on the second Sunday of February), you can appear in both exams in the same year!
Comparison of participating colleges between ATMA & MAT:
A larger number of management institutes, almost 3 to 4 times, participates in MAT (426 management institutes as in MAT – May 2009) compared to ATMA (134 management institutes as in ATMA -2009).
Which one is tougher – ATMA or MAT:
This would vary from individual to individual, depending on his strength/weakness in the main exam sections of Verbal, Quantitative & Analytical Reasoning. However from the analysis of exam pattern of MAT & ATMA, I find that more time is available to candidates of ATMA in Verbal section (50 sec compared to 45 sec in MAT) and also in Analytical section (60 sec compared to 49 sec in MAT). However, these timings are approximate only, just to give you some idea on time per section.
Besides above, in MAT, you have to appear in the extra section of “Indian and Global Environment” for which you need some extra preparation.
Hope with above analysis of MAT & ATMA exams, you have got some idea to form your own opinion and prepare accordingly! Keep visiting this blog for more on management entrance exams – with exam tips, sample papers & books for preparation of the exam.
