This blog article is being written to help the would-be-lawyers know what is the admission process for the best ranked law-colleges in India- the names of the law entrance exams. It tells you which are these law colleges, how many seats are there in each of them & the name of entrance exams or admission process for these top ranked law colleges.
Let me begin this by saying that the term “ Best ranked Indian College” is always controversial, as there is no apex authority whose ranking can be considered as absolute and final. There are a number of organisations which carries out annual survey of Indian colleges and brings out this list every year in the month of June/July. These surveys include - Outlook-MDRA College ranking, India Today-Nielsen College ranking etc.
If you compare the ranking list, you will find that there is a quite a bit of similarity in the name of colleges which appears in these lists – may be although differently ranked in different list. Therefore, in preparing this blog post, I am accepting the ranking brought out by India Today-Nielsen, so that the name of law colleges can be shortlisted for this study on the Indian law colleges admission process.
List of 25 best ranked law colleges:
In the table at right, you can find the list of last 7-years ranking of Indian law colleges. Eight out of these twenty best Indian law colleges are from a hallowed group called National Law Schools/Universities – for which you need to appear for a single entrance exam – ubiquitous CLAT (Common Law Admission Test).
Let us get to know how many seats are available in each of these top-20 law colleges - so that you can get an idea about in which colleges you have more chances of getting admissions - more the number of seats, easier it would be to get a seat, specially if the ranking is towards the bottom.
Number of seats in best ranked Indian law colleges:
You can find from the table at left how many seats are available in each of these law colleges. Please keep in mind that these figures changes from year-to-year and hence the figures given here are indicative only.
Also, number of seats in these law colleges are for under-graduate programs only - LL.B. (3 YR), B.A.LL.B. (5 YR) & B.B.A.LL.B. (5 YR). For the year you want to take admission, you have to visit the entrance exam websites of the law colleges given below to know the exact number of seats.
How to get these seats? This is the subject matter of following section on Indian law entrance exams.
Name of entrance exams/admission procedures for all these top 20 law colleges is given below.
Name of Entrance Exams/Admission process for best ranked law colleges:
CLAT (Common Law Admission Test):
As said before, out of the list of 20 colleges given above, number of seats in the eight National Law Schools/Universities is 907 (marked in blue background in table above). There is a single law entrance exam called CLAT for these institutes.
In addition to above eight ranked law colleges, through CLAT, you can also get admissions in 700 seats of six other National Law Schools/Universities, CLAT college-wise seats of which is given in the table at left. Each of these CLAT institutes are very very good law colleges. There are therefore 1607 seats available through CLAT.
You can find two very exhaustive blog articles of mine on CLAT:
This tells you what is CLAT, what are the eligibility and how to apply for CLAT

This blog article is being posted to help those of you who are going to appear in this exam with prep materials – Sample Papers & Books for NPCIL ET Exam along with a discussion on the exam pattern.
Let me start this article by telling you that prep materials available on the net for NPCIL ET Exam is very scarce – after searching thoroughly on the net for exam papers (sample/previous years) of NPCIL ET exam, I could not locate any reliable paper. Hence, in such cases my advice is always: go for prep materials of a similar exam. In this case, I am pointing you to the ET exam conducted by NTPC. NTPC is a PSU like NPCIL and its Executive Trainee exam is very competitive, as NTPC is a Maharatna company. Eligibility required is same – minimum 60% marks in B.E./B. Tech. Another exam of which you can take help of is GATE.
NPCIL ET Exam Pattern:
NPCIL has not said anything about the pattern of its written Executive Trainee Exam. But as per the FAQ section of its recruitment site, the exam will consist of only Technical section – specific to your Engineering Discipline (Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Instrumentation & Chemical).
However NPCIL ET Demo Test is going to give you a very good idea. So keep checking the above link to know when it comes out.
Sample Papers for NPCIL ET Exam:
As said, there are no reliable previous years exam papers of NPCIL. Hence I am posting below following links to download the GATE papers relevant to your discipline. Why GATE papers? Because if you want to test your engineering knowledge, GATE happens to be the best exam.

When the first recruitment event was organized on 5th/6th February 2007 for ICICI Bank, the students appearing in the event asked me what is a “Psychometric Test” as it happens to be one of the ICICI selection process. To help them, I prepared a small booklet on Psychometric Test which they found useful. I thought than; why not post the material in a website, since this will be required by future students again?
As I continued to think seriously on posting the materials on a website, I felt that a fresher needs some more hand-holding. So I listed out what are the things a fresher need for venturing in the job market and made small articles on the same. Than I thought, a fresher needs not only grooming for job market but also information on job ads from time to time, so that he can apply and appear in the selection process.
It than occurred to me that a blog would be much more useful than a website, as I have to update the contents frequently. That is how this blog- Career Quips was born!
You can find the “Psychometric Test” material which I had posted for the NEPIF students in the “Freshers Job Tools” section at left top part of this blog. In the same section, you will be able to find the other articles which was posted for freshers. On the other hand you can find the info about important job openings/exams in the section “Last Ten articles” at right middle part of the blog, which I keep updating from time to time.
How have I marketed this blog?
It may surprise you, but let me tell you the truth – I have never advertised anywhere about this blog, other than two/three odd mails which I had sent to a few mailing list in which I am a part of. I have not spend a single paisa marketing it. Yet, the visitors keep coming because of word of mouth and also yes, thanks to Google – close to 90% of visit is through Google search!
Who am I?
I am B. Tech. in Civil Engineering, now working as a mid-level manager in a Fortune-500 company in India. I have a wonderful wife and a naughty kid of three, picture of whom you can find below.

Most of the examinees of railway engineering exams (such as the RRB exam for Sr. Section Engineer, Junior Engineer, Senior Supervisor & Depot Material Superintendent) are in dilemma over what to prepare for the RRB written exam, as not much have been said about the exam pattern or syllabus in the notification. But since the merit list is prepared based on the written test alone (i.e. without any GD/Interview), finding the prep materials for RRB engineering exam – Sample papers and prep books is of paramount importance to succeed.
This blog post is therefore being made to help you prepare for the RRB written exam for engineers (including JE). In the latest recruitment notification by RRB, if you see the eligibility, you would find that there are broadly two groups of posts, based on qualification:
1.0 Degree in Engineering: Sr. Section Engineer, Chief Depot Mat. Superintendent
2.0 Diploma in Engineering: Junior Engineer, Senior Supervisor & Depot Material Superintendent.
Therefore, your preparation should be based accordingly – depending on which positions you have applied for.
First let us discuss the pattern of RRB exam for engineers.
Pattern RRB Written Exam for Engineers:
As said not much has been said about the pattern of RRB written exam in the notification other than the following:
The written exam will consist of following two groups of test sections:
1.0 Aptitude Test: It will have test sections on General Awareness, Arithmetic, General Intelligence and Reasoning.
2.0 Technical Test: It will have questions on the specific engineering branch.
There are total 150 Objective Type questions to be answered in 2 hours. There is negative marking - 1/3rd of the allotted marks for each question.
Other than above, the notification does not says there would be how many questions in each test section or marks per question. But you can expect either half or more than half weightage to be given for Technical Test – may be about 60% marks would be for Technical Test and the rest for Aptitude Test.
Syllabus for RRB Written Exam for Engineers:
As given in the notification, the syllabus for the exam would conform to the syllabus of Degree level engineering for Degree level posts and Diploma level engineering for Diploma level posts. No specific syllabus has been prescribed either for engineering or for aptitude test sections.
Sample papers for RRB Written Exam for Engineers:
I had searched on the net for the sample papers/ previous years exam papers specific to RRB exam – but quality of the sample papers are not that good and also not authentic. The findings are as below:
In absence of authentic exam papers, I would advise you to go for similar test sections of other competitive exams – such as the ones I am giving below for bank PO exams:
Sample paper for General Awareness test:
Sample paper for Arithmetic/Quantitative Aptitude:
Sample paper for Test of Reasoning:
You can also check the previous blog post of mine titled: Test of Reasoning: Sample Question papers & Books, which not only tells you about the four types of Test of reasoning (Numerical Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, Abstract Reasoning & Diagrammatic Reasoning), but also gives you sample papers and books for the test of reasoning.
