UPSC has just issued exam notification for Indian Police Services Limited Competitive Examination 2012 for the first time. Online submission of form has started from 6th March and the last date to apply online is 1st April, 2012. This exam notification is going to be available in most of the national dailies as well as In Employment News dated 10th March, 2012.
This blog post articulates important points from above notification to help you apply for the same. But before going further, let us know why UPSC is conducting this special exam for IPS, called Limited Competitive Examination (LCE).
Why IPS LCE is being conducted by UPSC:
There is a huge shortfall of IPS officers in senior ranks in India. Although fresh IPS officers are recruited through the prestigious all-India Civil Services exam, the number of officers being recruited has not been able to match the required IPS officer strength. Also, because of insurgency situations, there is huge and urgent need of senior (read Experienced) IPS officials, specially in Maoist areas. The IPS has a sanctioned strength of 4,720 officers. But due to poor planning by the ministry over decades, almost one third of the same is vacant.
Thus, Ministry of Home Affairs have advertised now for recruitment of those officers who have already completed 5 years of service as DSP in State Police Service or Assistant Commandants in Central Para Military Forces or Captain or Major or equivalent in the Armed Forces.
Since this recruitment is limited to only those persons serving in above capacities in State Police Service, Para Military Forces or Armed Forces, this special IPS exam is called as Limited Competitive Exam (LCE).
Important dates for UPSC IPS LCE Exam 2012:
Last date to apply online: 1st April, 2012.
Last date for receipt of online form printout with enclosures at UPSC, Delhi: 19th April 2012.
Date of IPS Limited Competitive Exam 2012: From 20th May, 2012.
Eligibility for UPSC IPS LCE Exam 2012:
1.0 Age Eligibility:
Max 35 age as on 01/08.2012. (i.e DOB not earlier than 2nd August, 1977)
Relaxation in upper age limit: OBC: 1 year, SC/ST: 2 years.
2.0 Work Experience Eligibility:
Five years of continuous, actual, unblemished service record as:
DSP under State Police Service OR
Assistant Commandants in Para Military Forces (CRPF, BSF, ITBP, CISF, SSB) OR
Captain or Major or equivalent rank in the Armed Forces.
Selection Process for UPSC IPS LCE Exam 2012:
The selection to IPS through this Limited Competitive Examination consists of a written test followed by Interview. While the written test consists of 1000 marks, marks allotted to Interview is 200. Out of the 1000 marks in the written test, the Paper-III (Descriptive English) is qualifying in nature and hence written test marks for merit-list is 800 marks.
IPS LCE Exam 2012 Exam Centres:
IPS Limited Competitive Exam 2012 would be conducted in the cities of Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Guwahati, Kolkata & Nagpur.
Number of vacancies in IPS LCE Exam 2012:
As given in the notification number of posts to be filled through IPS LCE exam 2012 has not been decided at the time of notification. The number of will be finalized later on in consultation with the Ministry of Home Affairs.
UPSC IPS LCE Exam 2012 Online Form:
You can apply for IPS Limited Competitive Exam 2012 only through online application form. There is no offline form. However, after submitting the form online, you have to take printout of the same and send it with the required enclosures to Secretary, Union Public Service Commission, Dholpur House, Shahjahan Road, New Delhi – 110069, so that it reaches on or before 19th April, 2012.
