NTSE Cut-Off mark Category-wise: Highest, Lowest & Average

November 26, 2011

NTSE Cut off mark
How much mark to score in NTSE to get that scholarship? What is the highest & lowest NTSE mark scored among successful students? This blog post of mine is dedicated to provide you these interesting info – cut-off mark scored in NTSE category-wise: General, SC, ST & Disabled along with the statistics of highest & average marks.

The data for presenting you this info has been taken from the result of national level NTSE 2011 –this data is representative and therefore has been given just to make an idea about how much mark to score in forthcoming NTSE exams. You can click here to download the NTSE result based on which the mark analysis in this article has been made.

Percentage of success in NTSE:
NTSE Success rate
In NTSE 2011, Altogether 4265 students appeared and out of that 1063 was successful. Thus the success rate was 25% - one in every four students who had appeared got the NTSE scholarship. How many students in each category appeared and how many were successful? You can find the success rate in the table at right.

NTSE Category-wise Cut-Off marks:
Cut off percentage of marks
Cut off marks for each category is given below. While the table at left gives you the %age of total marks for each cut-off.
General Category Cut off: 149.
SC Category Cut off: 123.
ST Category Cut off: 116.
Disabled Category Cut off: 79.
From this you can have an idea that you need to score at least around 75% marks in General category to crack the NTSE. Similarly you can find the %age of marks to crack NTSE for other categories.

NTSE Topper Marks:
What are the marks scored by toppers in each category in NTSE? Table below gives you this info along with %age of total marks scored by them:
NTSE Toper Marks
Thus in General category, the topper got as much as 93% questions correct.

Highest Lowest Average NTSE MAT SAT Marks
Highest, Lowest & Average NTSE MAT & SAT Marks:
What are the maximum marks scored in each category in each of the test sections (i.e. MAT & SAT) of NTSE? The blue background table at right gives you that. For example highest mark scored in MAT is 98 & SAT is 88 for General category. Similarly you can find the max marks for other categories - say in SC category, the marks are 93 & 68.

The green shaded table at middle gives you the minimum marks scored in each category in each of the test sections (i.e. MAT & SAT) of NTSE. Thus with as low as 35 marks in SAT in ST category someone qualified in NTSE.

The blue shaded table at bottom gives you the average marks scored in each category.

From the above table of marks you can find distinctly that SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) marks scored are less than MAT (Mental Ability Test) marks - thus SAT section is tougher than MAT section. So if you can do well in SAT, it will be very easy for you to crack the NTSE.

Hope above analysis of NTSE marks has given you a very good insight into the marks to be scored to be successful in NTSE. For your preparation for NTSE, I had posted following other blog articles which you may find useful:

ISAT Exam Pattern, Syllabus, Papers & Books

November 24, 2011

ISAT Exam Pattern Syllabus Papers Books
This blog post of mine intends to provide you the prep materials for ISAT (IIST Admission test) – the Syllabus, Exam Papers & Books together with an analysis of ISAT exam pattern to help you prepare for the same. In case you do not know what ISAT is or have not applied but would like to apply for the same, you can go through my previous blog article titled: ISAT 2012 Notification, Eligibility & Forms.

Let us start that with an analysis of the ISAT exam pattern.

ISAT Exam Pattern:
ISAT Exam Pattern
ISAT consists of 75 Objective type questions – 25 each from in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics which has to be answered in 3 hours. Each correct answer gives you 3 marks, while the wrong answer gives you -1. With this, the pattern of ISAT is as given at right.

ISAT is a comparatively new exam – the first ISAT was conducted only in 2010. So it is still
ISAT Question Paper Pattern
evolving and there may be some changes in forthcoming years in the pattern –say for suppose in ISAT 2013. The exam pattern given above is based on ISAT 2011. But in ISAT 2010, there were two exam papers with 40 questions each and the paper pattern was as given at left.

As you can see, there some minor variations in the number of questions asked in each subject – overall pattern remains the same: equal number of questions from each of the three subjects Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. So do not be bothered very much about distribution of questions – prepare for each subject equally.

ISAT 2012 Syllabus:
Syllabus for ISAT 2012 is available in IIST website. You can click here to download the syllabus. In case the same is not available, you can go through my blog post titled: ISAT 2012 Syllabus.

ISAT Exam Papers:
You can download through the links below the previous two years actual exam papers of ISAT:
Above links allows you to download these papers in pdf format directly from IIST website. However in case there is a change in server resource of IIST, where shall you get these ISAT papers? That’s why I have uploaded the same in this box.net link.

Exam Prep Books for ISAT:
ISAT Exam Prep Book
As you would agree, above information gives you only a very good understanding about ISAT – what is the exam pattern and what type of questions are asked. Your actual exam prep material for ISAT has to be books. As the syllabus of ISAT is based on CBSE syllabus, so go thoroughly the NCERT text books of Class-XI & XII.

In addition, you can use the following guide book for ISAT:
List Price: Rs.295; Offer Price: Rs.280; Discount: Rs. 15 (5%)

This book is available in most of the good bookstores. However, if you do not find it, you can also order it online from Flipkart.com, which offers attractive discount apart from free shipping. You can also use the Cash-On-Delivery feature of flipkart – pay only when it is delivered at your home.

Also, as IIST had used IIT-JEE as an entrance exam prior to ISAT 2010 (when it was conducted for the first time), you can use the IIT JEE prep books to prepare for ISAT. You can find the list of these books in my exclusive blog post titled: IIT JEE Exam prep book.

Hope with above study materials for ISAT, your preparation for the exam becomes smooth. As I had told you in the previous blog post, ISAT is not an easy exam to crack. Only one among 560 gets the IIST seat through ISAT. But there is a saying: when the going gets tough, the tough gets going. Best wishes!

How I recovered from Google Spam penalty –Part-II

November 20, 2011

This blog post of mine follows my earlier blog article titled: How I recovered from Google Spam penalty –Part-I, which introduces you to what is a Google web-spam penalty and how my site got penalized because of it. I had told you about the intent of making these blog articles – yes, it is to help the site-owners correct their web-sites so that they can recover/avoid from the penal action fast and easy.

As you had found in that blog post, I got the response from Google within 20 days of submission of reconsideration request that my site violated Google Quality Guidelines. Now what should I do about it? What things on my blog violated the quality policies? Although I was searching on net for answers, none could satisfy me in totality. So I had a hard look at two places:

1.0 Read and re-read what are the Google Quality Guidelines: what are these things for not following which my blog was penalized?
2.0 Analyzed my blog thoroughly (both what visitors see as well as what is not visible i.e. the HTML codes in my blog template): to find which part might have violated the quality guidelines.

And I was stunned to find the outcome. Yes, my blog was a fit case for penalty and it might have been so for a long time.

There were two obvious places which were spamming:
1.0 Invisible part: In the template codes, I had put too many keywords in meta tag “Keywords” - 1031 words, 5611 characters! Just imagine that.. (click to enlarge)
2.0 Visible part: At the bottom of every blog post, I had put empty tags as shown below (click to enlarge):Empty Tags
So do not you think that my blog was spamming? But actually I was not aware of it. I had used the Google Adword keyword tool to find which keywords matches my blog and inserted as many of those keywords as possible in the template “keywords” meta tag! Secondly, it was also a poor decision on my part to follow some other sites in which I show empty tag insertion.

So after finding these two ugly truths, I began exploring more of my blog. And I found there are other places where correction was needed. So it took me 45 days of time (from 11th August till 26th September, 2011) to find out what were those mistakes and correct them. At the end of it, after I was convinced that I could correct maximum thing possible, I again submitted reconsideration request on 26th September, 2011 (click to enlarge).Google Reconsideration RequestI am re-producing below the content of the reconsideration request so that you can take lessons out of it – notice not only the technical issues but also see how the request is structured into statements and actions.

My blog was penalized on 11th August, 2011 and I was intimated on 30th August that the blog violates Google's quality guidelines. After going through the guidelines, on close scrutiny and work of more than 45 days, I found that my blog had following problems. I have since taken corrective action which is given alongside the problems and I think the blog deserves now to be reconsidered. No SEO help was taken to either diagnose the problems or correct them.

1.0 Problem: Duplicate contents - There were too many duplicate pages with obsolete content as no blog cleanup was done since from inception in October 2007.
Action: More than half of the blog content has been deleted – out of 716 pages, deleted 368 pages. Only 348 pages now remains which I consider to be unique.

2.0 Problem: Multiple domain duplicate contents - Another of my blog: http://XXX.blogspot.com, had substantially similar contents.
Action: The whole blog has now been deleted.

Problem: Google CSE Widget was installed in one of the pages in separate domain (www.xxx.zzz) as I did not know how to install the same in the blogger template.
Action: I have now installed the Google CSE Widget within my own blog.

3.0 Problem: External Links – Too many links from my site were obsolete, resulting into 404 errors.
Action: Corrected/deleted the links with 404 errors.

Problem: Internal Links
– I had placed label (i.e. tag) list in my home page, which resulted in large number of internal links, which might have appeared as a “doorway” page to spiders.
Action: Moved the “label list index page” out of the home page.

4.0 Problem: Participation in link schemes - Mutual link sharing was done with “X” & “Y”.
Action:
Deleted those mutual links on my blog and also have mailed admin of these two sites to remove links to my blog.

5.0 Problem: Irrelevant keywords – I had placed too many keywords in META tag “Keyword” in the template, which might have appeared as keyword spamming. Also there were empty tags in the bottom of blog posts.
Action: I have reduced the number of meta tag keywords, limiting to only 147 now. Also removed the empty tags in the blog post bottoms.

6.0 Problem: Affiliate links
– The “X” affiliate links were “Do Follow” links previously, which might have appeared as again link sharing.

Action:
I have now used the rel="nofollow" attribute for these links. But I think this Affiliate program adds value to the blog and therefore have not deleted the affiliate links. I have proof to support my claim.

7.0 Problem: Use of revolvermaps.com Widget
– This used to take a lot of time to load, making the page slower.

Action:
I have removed the revolvermaps.com Widget.

Besides above actions taken, I also ran Google Page Speed tool to improve upon the page load time and implemented the suggestions. The pages now load faster – its score is 90/100.

Besides the above issues, if there are anything more required to be done, I would be grateful if you point it out.

After submission of the re-consideration, I had to wait and wait till 13th October from when I could see gradual improvements in the blog traffic. And the response from Google regarding revocation of penalty came finally on 15th October (i.e. just within 20 days) (click to enlarge):Google Manual Spam Action Revoked
So at the end of these two articles, I would like to suggest following guidelines to penalized webmasters:
1.0 If your site has been penalized, do not worry. If you take proper corrective actions, the same will be revoked in about three weeks of time.
2.0 Also, do not worry about whether the penalty is due to say “Panda” effect or due to “spam penalty”: In both the cases you have to amend your site. So act, act and act!
3.0 Go through the guidelines minutely and compare your site for each guideline - try to find the problem yourself. No one would do that for you!
4.0 Submit your second reconsideration request only after you are convinced you got rid of all those problems: Chances are, if you post the request with still unsolved problems, your site will not be regarded for the third time.

I am listing below some websites which were tremendously useful in solving my problem:SEO Tools
1.0 googlepenalty.com: A good site from where you can learn from a person whose site was also penalized. It has got a few good tool to find what may be wrong.
2.0 seocentro.com: You can check the meta tags in your template, keyword density etc. through tools in this webpage.
3.0 Xenu's Link Sleuth: The broken links on your site may makes it less trustworthy to Googlebot. Also if you link to bad neighborhood, your site ranking goes down. So get rid of the broken links. I had as many as 7500+ broken links because the site was not maintained for 4 years since from inception.

My Blog Traffic has again picked up! So yours can too!
Blog Traffic Picked UpHope above tips helps you in your pursuit to come out of Google penalty. Yes, that would take some real efforts, but at the end of it, you will have a great satisfaction of solving a cryptic puzzle!
Best wishes, buddy!
