CDS Exam Pattern, Sample papers, Books & Coaching institutes

This blog post is being made as a sequel to my previous blog article titled: CDS Exam (I) 2012: Notification, Eligibility & Forms, which tells you what is a CDS exam and how to apply for the same along with the eligibilities required and where to get the CDS exam forms.
The focus of this blog post is on providing you the study materials for CDS exam – by first telling what is the exam pattern and than giving you the sources of sample papers, guide books and the coaching institutes to help you prepare for the CDS exam.
CDS Exam Pattern: CDS selection process consists of following three stages: 1.0 CDS Written exam. 2.0 SSB Interview. 3.0 Medical test.
How many candidates appear in each CDS exam? I had made an analysis based on CDS-II Exam data from 58th UPSC Annual Report (2007-08) and following is the finding: As you can see – number of candidate applying/appearing in the CDS exam is showing a downward trend – a good sign for you (you would have less number of competitors)!. While another good information you can find from above table is that only 60% of those who applies for CDS exam appears in the CDS exam – thus 40% of applicants is eliminated automatically!
Getting back to CDS Written exam pattern, you would have two papers if you appear for OTA, Chennai while three papers, if you appear CDS exam for other three defence institutes:
CDS exam pattern for IMA, NA & AFA: CDS exam pattern for OTA: As you can find from above exam pattern – you have 1 minute for each question (120 questions, 120 minutes) in English & GK paper while you have 1.2 minute per question for Maths paper (You do not have to appear in Maths paper, if you are appearing CDS exam for OTA, Chennai). Thus you have sufficient time for answering CDS papers – hence accuracy more than speed is the key to doing good in CDS exam. You should also be accurate in answering the questions because there is negative marking - 1/3rd marks for each wrong answer!
CDS Exam Syllabus: You can go through the blog post titled CDS Exam Syllabus to find the syllabus for this exam.
CDS Exam Answer sheets:
CDS Answer sheets are of type Optical Response Sheet (ORS), which looks like the one shown at right. You have to mark the correct answer by darkening the option circle completely with HB pencil – right method along with some wrong method is shown in the screenshot.
This is important, because many examinees marks their answers incorrectly on the ORS answer sheet, as a result of which they are not selected.
CDS Exam Sample Papers:
So you may be searching for some free online sample papers for CDS exam? I searched on the net and found the following CDS Exam Sample Papers:
From UPSC website: CDS Exam-2009 Actual test papers: Click here to download the CDS Exam English test paper Click here to download the CDS Exam General Knowledge test paper Click here to download the CDS Exam Elementary Mathematics test paper
Although there were some other sample papers on the net, I could not find them that good.
CDS Exam Books:
Although above sample papers gives you some idea on what sort of questions are asked in the CDS exam, you would need more study materials for practice and hence can use following guide books for CDS exam. These books are available in most of the bookstores, but you can also order them online by clicking the links below, from Flipkart.com which offers huge discounts from 10% to 20%, apart from free shipping/postage in India if the order exceeds Rs. 100/=. You can choose to pay through Credit Card/Debit Card/Internet Banking. You can also choose to pay through “Cash-on-Delivery” i.e. you pay in cash only when the same is delivered at your doorstep:
CDS Exam Coaching Institutes:
C. S. Institute of Defence & Management: It offers a 30 day CDS exam training program for a fee of Rs. 5500/- (Including Boarding & lodging: Rs. 10300/-). Click here to know more about it Cavalier India also offers coaching program for CDS. Click here to know more about it
Preparatory materials for CDS SSB Interview:
After being selected in the CDS exam, you would need to appear in SSB Interview. What is SSB Interview? What tests are conducted in SSB Interview? Which book to study for SSB Interview? Visit my previous blog post titled: SSB Interview and how to prepare to know the answers of all these questions. Hope above information on the study materials for CDS exam: Sample Papers, Books & Coaching institute is found useful by you. Best wishes for your CDS written exam!

GATE Question Pattern with Sample Questions
|
|
October 27, 2011
|
|
|
|
This blog post of mine focuses on the three types of questions asked in GATE – it tries to give an in-depth analysis of the type of questions you actually face in GATE. If you want to have an over-all idea on the pattern of GATE exam, please visit my earlier blog article titled: GATE Exam Structure/Pattern/Format.
All the questions asked in GATE are multiple choice objective type questions. These objective questions can be classified into following three types: 1.0 Individual questions: Each question either 1 mark or 2 marks. 2.0 Common Data Questions: Each question 2 marks. 3.0 Linked answer questions: Each question 2 marks. While you should not bother to learn too much about the Individual type questions (as you must have already come across them), you should take care to learn what are Common Data & Linked answer type questions.
Individual questions: These are usual MCQ (Multiple Choice Questions), each question is independent of other. For example – following was a question from GATE CE -2010 paper:
Q: Two coins are simultaneously tossed. The probability of two heads simultaneously appearing is (A) 1/8 (B) 1/6 (C) 1/4 (D) 1/2
Common Data Questions: In these types of questions, one problem statement/passage is given, which is followed by two questions. Both of these questions are independent of each other and hence the answer of one question is not required to find the answer of the other question.
Example: You can find below two Common Data question (Q50 & Q51) from actual GATE CE -2010 paper:
Statement: The moisture holding capacity of the soil in a 100 hectare farm is 18cm/m. the field is to be irrigated when 50 percent of the available moisture in the root zone is depleted. The irrigation water is to be supplied by a pump working for 10hours a day, and water application efficiency is 75%. Details of crops planned for cultivation are as follows:
Q50. The capacity of irrigation system required to irrigate crop X in 36 hectares is (A) 83litres/sec (B) 67 liters/sec (C) 57 liters/sec (D) 53 liters/sec.
Q51. The area of crop Y that can be irrigated when the available capacity of irrigation system is 40 liters / sec is (A) 40hectares (B) 36 hectares (C) 30 hectares (D) 27 hectares
Linked answer questions: These questions are very similar to Common Data Questions. One problem statement/passage is given, which is followed by two questions. But unlike Common Data Questions, in Linked answer questions, answer of one question is required to find the answer of the other question.
Example: You can find below two Linked answer questions (Q52 & Q53) from actual GATE CE -2010 paper:
Statement: A doubly reinforced rectangular concrete beam has a width of 300mm and an effective depth of 500mm. the beam is reinforced with 2200mm2 of steel in tension and 628mm2 of steel in compression. The effective cover for compression steel is 50mm. Assume that both tension and compression steel yield. The grades of concrete and steel used are M20 and Fe250 respectively. The stress lock parameters (rounded off to first two decimal places) for concrete shall be as per IS 456:200.
Q52. The depth of neutral axis is (A) 205.30mm (B) 184.56mm (C) 160.91mm (D) 145.30mm
Q53. The moment of resistance of the section is (A) 206.00kN-m (B) 209.20 kN-m (C) 236.80 kN-m (D) 251.90kN-m,
I am giving blow two simple graphics to show you the difference between Common Data Questions & Linked answer Questions: Hope with above information of GATE Question type/Question Pattern you have got the required insight on the type of questions you are actually going to face in GATE. From time to time I would keep posting more prep materials for GATE. So keep visiting me. Labels: GATE exam |

GATE 2012 Exam Structure/Pattern/Format
|
|
October 24, 2011
|
|
|
|
What is the format/scheme of GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) exam, how many questions are asked and are of what marks? What is the duration of GATE? These are the question that comes automatically to a GATE newbie as he starts to prepare for the exam. Although all this information is available in the official GATE website, I thought to reproduce the info in a capsular form so that it is easily understood by a person new to GATE exam.
Structure of GATE exam means the format/scheme of GATE – how many papers are there, of how many questions/marks and of what duration. While this blog post tries to help you understand this, if you want to dig deeper and want to know what sort of questions are asked, please go through my blog article titled: GATE Question pattern with sample questions. List of GATE Exam subjects:
Let me tell you that there are 21 GATE subjects and the pattern of exam for each of them are identical except the three subjects - GG (Geology and Geophysics), XE (Engineering Sciences) & XL(Life Sciences). Pattern of these 3 subjects has some minor variations compared to other GATE subjects. List of these 21 GATE subjects are as below: 1). Aerospace Engineering (AE) 2). Agricultural Engineering (AG) 3). Architecture and Planning (AR) 4). Biotechnology (BT) 5). Chemical Engineering (CH) 6). Chemistry (CY) 7). Civil Engineering (CE) 8). Computer Science and Information Technology (CS) 9). Electrical Engineering (EE) 10). Electronics and Communication Engineering (EC) 11). Instrumentation Engineering (IN) 12). Mathematics (MA) 13). Mechanical Engineering (ME) 14). Metallurgical Engineering (MT) 15). Mining Engineering (MN) 16). Physics (PH) 17). Production and Industrial Engineering (PI) 18). Textile Engineering and Fibre Science (TF) 19). Geology and Geophysics (GG) 20). Engineering Sciences (XE) 21). Life Sciences (XL)
There is only a single GATE exam paper for each subject, which consists of 65 Objective type questions of 100 mark to be answered in 3 hours. Each of these papers has two parts – “General Aptitude" part containing 15 marks & the “Subject-specific” part containing rest 85 marks. General Aptitude questions are common for all GATE subjects.
GATE Exam Structure for all subjects except GG, XE & XL: With above concept, let us find how many questions are asked in “General Aptitude" section of the GATE paper. As you can find in the GATE exam pattern below, there are 10 questions in the “General Aptitude" section – 5 of them of 1 mark each & the other 5 questions of 2 mark each – thus totaling total 10 questions which worth 15 marks in the “General Aptitude" section. As you can see above, the “Subject-specific” section of the GATE paper consists of 55 questions which worth 85 marks. Out of these 55 questions, 25 questions are of 1 mark each while the rest 30 questions are of 2 mark each – thus totaling 85 marks.
Negative marking in GATE: If the question is of 1 mark, there is negative marking of 1/3rd mark (i.e. 0.33) for each wrong answer. If the question is of 2 mark, there is negative marking of 2/3rd mark (i.e. 0.67) for each wrong answer.
GATE Exam Structure for GG, XE & XL: While the pattern of 18 GATE subjects are same as the format given above, as said previously, structure of GATE GG, XE & XL are a little different. The pattern of each subject is given below separately:
GATE Exam Structure for GG:
GATE Exam Structure for XE:
GATE Exam Structure for XL:
Hope with above discussion you have understood what is the structure of GATE exam. My next article GATE Question pattern with sample questions would go a little deeper from here, telling you what sort of questions are asked in GATE. So please check this blog again later. Labels: GATE exam |

List of PSU recruiting through GATE 2012– Notification Eligibility Forms
|
|
October 23, 2011
|
|
|
|
At this moment, close to 1500 jobs are available for freshers in engineering disciplines in major PSU (Public Sector Undertaking) in India – the list includes heavyweights like IOCL, NTPC, BHEL, Power Grid etc.
All these public sector companies are going to recruit ET (Engineer Trainee) based on GATE scores. At first they would shortlist the candidates based on GATE score and than they would be called for further selection process which consists of GD & Interview.
No wonder therefore, number of applicant in GATE 2012 has touched a mind boggling figure of 11, 39,395. Compare this with number of applicants in GATE 2011: 5, 52,530 & GATE 2010: only 4, 14, 093. Yes, the number of GATE applicants have more than doubled compared to last year. Most of these applicants actually would not go for higher studies, but are appearing in GATE for selections to the PSUs.
Which are these PSUs recruiting through GATE? Is there a list on the net? I failed to find any and have therefore prepared this ready reckoner by compiling the data from individual company recruitment websites. The idea is to give you all the details required to apply for these PSU ET jobs – you can download the notification, find the eligibility and the application form with form submission dates. You can also find which GATE subjects to appear for which PSU company from following table:
It is needless to say that GATE 2012 application form last date is over on 21st October, 2011. If you had not applied for GATE 2012, you can not apply for the ET jobs in these companies. The PSU list recruiting through GATE as given above is not exhaustive. These are only live cases of the companies in which you can apply. There are other PSU like BARC as given below which also uses GATE score for Engineer/Scientist recruitment.
BARC OCES/DGFS Recruitment:
If you are an engineering graduate or a science graduate going for your PG, and would like to join the prestigious organisation BARC (Bhabha Atomic Research Centre), there are two avenues of employment for you:
1.0 OCES: Orientation Course for Engineers and Scientists.
2.0 DGFS: DAE (Department of Atomic Energy) Graduate Fellowship Scheme.
This ET recruitment process of using the GATE score was first started by IOCL in 2009. But now, as you have found more are joining the bandwagon. I am sure that in the future years, more and more companies like ONGC, HPCL, BPCL, GAIL etc. are going to follow GATE-scores for recruitment.
So take your studies in engineering days seriously – yes, GATE can be your GATE-way for that elusive first job! Best wishes!

Age of eligibility – how to find if you are eligible?
|
|
October 22, 2011
|
|
|
|
This is a very trivial thing to write about – almost all of you know how to find the difference in between two dates and hence you may consider this blog post not worth reading. However, there are still a few among you who may have confusions and it is for these small section of confused persons that this blog article is being written about. Believe me, I got a handful of mails asking me to post this.
The problem: Say the news paper ad or the website notification on recruitment/entrance exam says this about the eligibility on age: Your age should be minimum 17 years & maximum 21 years as on 01.01.2012. Now suppose your Date Of Birth (DOB) is dd.mm.yyyy. Question on your mind is: “Are you eligible?”
The easy solution: To find the DOB of minimum age: Just subtract minimum age from the reference year – i.e. say for the example above, subtract 17 from 2012 to arrive at DOB of minimum age as shown at right. So this DOB is 01.01.1995.
To find the DOB of maximum age: Subtract the maximum age from the reference year. Also add “1” to the date of reference – i.e. say for the example above, subtract 21 from year 2012 and add 1 to the date 01 as shown at right. And this DOB is 02.01.1991.
Now if you are within the above dates (and including them), you are eligible. i.e. you are eligible if your DOB is 01.01.1995 but not eligible if the DOB is 02.01.1995.
Similarly you are eligible if your DOB is 02.01.1991 but not eligible if the DOB is 01.01.1991. This maximum age is sometime confusing – because say, if your DOB is 01.01.1991, your age actually is 21 on 01.01.2012 and hence you should be eligible. So just contact the person concerned and clarify if your DOB is such like that.
How to find your age on a certain date: Say if your DOB is 02.01.1995, you are not eligible in above example. Why? What is your age on 01.01.2012?
To find your age at first you should know how many days each month of the year comprises of. If you do not know that, take help of the graphics on your knuckle (presented by BC Akhilesh) at right – each month at the hump is 31 days – Jan, Mar, May, Jul, Aug, Oct, Dec. Remaining, except Feb are 30 days.
February in leap year is 29 days, otherwise it is 28 days. How do you find a leap year? Take the year and divide it by 4 – if it is divisible, it is a leap year. But for centenary years (i.e. last 2 digits “00” – say 2000, 2100 etc.), you have to divide it by 400, instead of 4.
So with above information and your DOB 02.01.1995, let us find your age on 01.01.2012. Step-1: Find days First deduct the dates – now since you can not deduct 2 from 1 as shown below, borrow days from the month – since the month is January, add 31 to 1 – which makes it 32 days. Now deduct 2 from 32 – which gives you 30 days.
Step-2: Find months Than deduct the months – now you are left with “00” months as shown below. So borrow 12 months (i.e. 1 year) from the year – add 12 to “00” – which makes it 12 months. Now deduct 1 from 12 – which gives you 11 months.
Step-3: Find years Than deduct the year – now you are left with year “2011” as shown below. So deduct 1995 from 2011 – which gives you 16 years.
So your age is: 16 years, 11 months & 30 days on 01.01.2012. That’s why you are not eligible, since minimum age is 17 years.
Hope with above illustrations you can easily find whether you are age-wise eligible for any exam - be it in an entrance or a recruitment or a scholarship exam. That was easy, wasn't it? Labels: Freshers Job Tools |

To have some idea on how much mark to score in IIT-JEE:
These blog articles would throw some interesting information for you. For instance, you know that IIT-JEE is supposed to be conceptual and is a very hard exam to crack. Having said those, let’s come back to the topic of this article: IIT JEE 2012 exam notification.

IIT JEE 2013 exam date forecast: Some of you may be appearing in IIT-JEE 2013 - YES, you can appear in IIT-JEE only twice, that too in consecutive years. To be able to appear in JEE 2013, you must have appeared in JEE for the first time in 2013 or must have appeared in it only once before - in IIT-JEE 2012.
To help you know about the IIT JEE 2013 exam date in advance, I had carried out a trend analysis of IIT JEE exam dates for last 3 years from JEE 2010 to JEE 2012. I find that almost all of the dates (date of notification, form submission dates, exam dates & result dates) are fairly predictable. From the data given below, you can find exam dates of IIT JEE 2013: As you can find from above JEE dates, the notification for IIT JEE comes out in the last week of October/First week of November. The JEE form becomes available from first week of November and the last date of form submission is sometime in the middle of December. Date of JEE Exam is always on the second Sunday of April while the result is declared in the last week of May.
Keeping these exam date trends in mind, following date for IIT JEE 2013 is forecasted: Date of IIT JEE 2013 notification: 20/10/2012 (Sat) Last date of receipt of IIT JEE 2013 completed form: 20/12/2012 (Thurs) Date of IIT JEE 2013 Exam: 14/04/2013 (Sun) Using the same analysis, you can also find the date of IIT JEE 2014.
Kindly note that above are only forecasted dates to help you know about the schedule of IIT JEE approximately. Nearer notification date (say from last week of October), please check on the IIT Websites (say this IITD JEE website) and also subscribe to leading national dailies and Employment news/rozgar samachar. As I told you, I would look out for more info/prep materials for IIT JEE 2012 and post the same in this blog as and when I find them. So keep visiting me!

NTPC ET Recruitment 2012 Notification Eligibility Form
|
|
October 17, 2011
|
|
|
|
NTPC every year issues notification for recruitment of engineer trainees (ET). Just like 520 ET vacancies in 2011, NTPC has issued recruitment notification for 300 Engineering Executive Trainees for the year 2012 too, from the disciplines of Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Instrumentation & Electronics.
What are the eligibilities and how to apply for these engineer trainee positions in NTPC? This is the subject matter of current blog article.
But before we go further, a small introduction on NTPC.
What is NTPC: NTPC (National Thermal Power Corporation) is one of the five Maharatna PSU in India – it is India’s largest power company, producing 1/3rd of total power generation in India through its 22 power stations (15 coal based & 7 gas based) with an installed capacity of 34,845 MW. It also ranks as 348th in Forbes ‘Global 2000’ list of companies.
In 2008, it ranked as No. 1 in 'Best Workplaces for Large Organizations' and eighth overall by Great Places to Work in collaboration with the Economic Times.
Change in NTPC ET Recruitment process: From 2012 onwards, there has been a major change in how NTPC is going to recruit Engineer Trainees - till 2011, NTPC used to conduct its own Written recruitment test which was of 2 hour duration having two papers: Aptitude & Technical. The selection process for ET was hence: Written Test -> GD/Interview.
But from 2012 onwards NTPC is not going to conduct the written test itself - it is going to use the GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) scores to shortlist the candidates for its further selection process. The changed selection process form now onwards would be GATE-> GD/Interview.
Hence for the ET positions in NTPC from now onwards, you have to appear in GATE relevant to your discipline and do well in the same, so that you can be shorlisted by NTPC for GD & Interview.
Branch-wise NTPC ET vacancies for 2012: A total of 300 ET vacancies exists: Electrical(112), Mechanical(89), Civil(38), Instrumentation(31), Electronics(30).
NTPC ET Salary: Salaries offered by NTPC for ET is: pay scale of Rs. 24900-50500 at the basic pay of Rs. 24900/- during one-year training and than basic pay of Rs. 25650/-, after completion of the training period. This is apart from other benefits.
Eligibility for NTPC Engineer Trainee :Age Eligibility: For ET: Maximum 27 years as on 01.01.2012. Age relaxations exists for reserved categories.
Educational Eligibility: For ET: Minimum: 55% marks for SC, ST and Physically Challenged & 65% marks for others.. If you are a Final year / semester student than you may also apply.
Since you have to appear in GATE for these ET positions, it is needless to say that you also have to possess the eligibility for GATE, details of which can be found in my blog article titled: GATE 2012 Notification, Eligibility & Forms.
How to apply for NTPC ET Recruitment 2012: You have to register (i.e. apply) actually twice for NTPC ET positions, since GATE score is mandatory from 2012 onwards: Once for GATE & than for NTPC.
First you have to apply online for GATE 2012. How to apply for for GATE has been described in detail in this webpage. Last date for applying online for GATE 2012 is now 21st October, 2012. So better hurry!
Subsequent to your online registration for GATE, you would be able to download the GATE 2012 Admit card from 2nd January, 2012 onwards. Now you have to use the "GATE-2012 Registration Number" as given in the admit card to register online for NTPC ET Recruitment 2012.
The NTPC ET Recruitment 2012 Online form would be available from 6th January-2012 till 26th January-2012 in this NTPC Career website. How to apply online for the NTPC recruitment is described clearly in section "HOW TO APPLY:" of the NTPC job advertisement for Executive Trainees 2012.
IMPORTANT NTPC ET Recruitment 2012 DATES: Last date of online registration for GATE: 21.10.2011. Date of availability of GATE 2012 Admit Card (hence GATE-2012 Registration Number): 02.01.2012. Start date of online registration for NTPC ET Recruitment 2012: 06.01.2012. Last date of online registration for NTPC ET Recruitment 2012: 26.01.2012. Date of GATE-2012 exam: 12.02.2012.
Subsequent to your online registration for ET positions, NTPC would procure the GATE scores from GATE authority, shortlist the candidates and if you are within the merit list, would call you for the subsequent selection process - that is Group Discussion & Personal Interview.
In my subsequent blog post, I would cover more on GATE exam preparation and NTPC ET GD & Interview materials. So keep visiting this blog! Labels: NTPC Jobs |
