It has been a while since the notification for GATE 2012 came out on 12th September, 2011. While you must have gone through the information contained in the official GATE website, you may miss some important points and therefore this blog post is made to highlight the same.
First what is GATE - a primer: Contrary to popular perception, GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) is not only an entrance exam for PG studies in the elite tech-institutes of India (i.e. the seven IITs & one IISC – IISC, Bangalore), but GATE scores are also used for following purposes:
1.0 For entrance to PG studies in more than 300 tech institutes as per the list given in this website: yes, you can get admission in these very good engineering colleges through GATE.
2.0 As recruitment exam by many top-notch PSU like IOC, NTPC, Power Grid etc: yes, these days many organizations as given above have discontinued their own written recruitment exam (as these exams used to consume a lot of time/money/effort). These organizations uses GATE scores to shortlist the candidates for interview and further selection process.
3.0 As qualifying exam for various fellowships/scholarships like those for MHRD (Ministry of Human Resource Development) scholarship. Hence for these reasons, number of students appearing for GATE has increased over time.
What has changed in GATE 2012: 1.0 The application process has become “ONLY ONLINE”. There is no GATE 2012 offline form. You also have to download the GATE 2012 admit card only online. The admit card would not be sent to you by post from this time on. 2.0 You have to use “black ink ball point pen” instead of “HB pencils” to mark your answers (i.e. darken the bubble) in the GATE OMR answer sheet. 3.0 Two more GATE subjects – AR (Architecture and Planning) and AG (Agricultural Engineering) have been made online. This takes the number of online GATE subjects to six (other papers being: GG, TF, AE and MN). 4.0 The six online GATE subjects as given above would have multiple choice type questions as well as numerical answer type questions. 5.0 Pre-final year students (i.e. those appearing in their final exams in 2013) are not eligible to appear in GATE-2012.
GATE Eligibility: Eligibility required for appearing in GATE exam is given in this webpage. In short, candidates with any of the eligibility as given below can appear in GATE: 1.0 BE/B. Tech/B. Arch (4 year course after 10+2/Post-B.Sc./Post-Diploma). Final year students can also apply. 2.0 Master's in any branch of Science/Mathematics/ Statistics/Computer Applications. Final year students can also apply. 3.0 Student of Post-B.Sc., 4-year Integrated ME/M. Tech program: You need to be in the second or higher year. 4.0 Student of 5-year Integrated ME/M. GATE 2012 application form: As said before, you can apply only online from GATE 2012 onwards. There is no offline form.
Also, after submission of your data online, you have to take print out of the online form and send it with enclosures to that zonal GATE office, which corresponds to your choice of test center. So while applying for GATE, your first task should be to decide in which exam center you would like to appear in the exam and find the corresponding GATE zonal office.
Which are these exam centers and the corresponding GATE zonal office? You can find it in this webpage. Last dates for GATE 2012 forms: Last date for on-line submission of forms: 17th October 2011 Monday (23:00 Hrs). (Website closes beyond above date). Last date for receipt of online form printout at GATE Offices: 24th October 2011 Monday (23:00 Hrs).
What suppose if wish to appear in GATE 2013: I have a habit of forecasting probable dates for Indian entrance and recruitment exams. For GATE too, much before GATE 2012 notification came out, I had predicted these dates. You can find the same in my previous blog post titled: GATE 2012 & GATE 2013 Probable Dates. As you can see, I had almost told correctly about GATE 2012 much beforehand. Similarly, in the same blog post you can find the GATE 2013 dates and schedule your preparation accordingly.
I hope with above information you can apply confidently for GATE 2012. Best wishes! Labels: GATE exam |
