EIL MT exam pattern, Sample papers and Books

EIL MT exam pattern Sample papers and Books
This blog post is made as a sequel to my previous blog article on EIL MT Recruitment 2011 Notification, Eligibility & Forms which tells you elaborately on how to apply for the EIL MT positions along with eligibilities and online form.

Focus of this blog post is on to give you the study materials for EIL MT Exam – the sample papers and books along with an analysis of EIL MT exam pattern.

EIL MT exam pattern/selection process:
Selection process of EIL MT position consists of a written test followed by Interview for those shortlisted in the written test.

The written test centres for EIL MT positions are located in following 16 cities:
Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Kochi, Delhi, Guwahati, Jaipur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Ranchi, Secunderabad, Vadodara.
The exam is scheduled to be held in June/July 2010 (tentative).

Not much has been said in the EIL MT Recruitment notification about the EIL exam pattern other than that: “The test will comprise of technical questions as well as questions on Quantitative Aptitude, General Awareness, Reasoning and English Language.

So I had to dig on Internet sources to find the pattern of EIL Written test and findings are as follows:
There are two Objective type test papers of total 150 questions to be answered in 2 hrs:
1.0 Technical paper: 100 Question.
2.0 Non-Technical paper: 50 Question.
There is negative marking - 1/4th mark.
Compared to non-Technical paper, Technical paper is easier – mostly basic questions are asked. In non-Technical paper, 5-10 questions are from general English while rest are from GK. Reportedly, no questions were asked from Quantitative Aptitude or Test of Reasoning.

EIL MT exam syllabus/study materials for Technical paper:
No syllabus has been prescribed by EIL for its Management Trainees written test. In absence of a specific syllabus, how do you prepare for the exam? My suggestion is to refer to the GATE exam syllabus for your particular branch of engineering. This suggestion is not only for EIL exam , but also for any other entrance/recruitment exams for which the syllabus is not defined.

EIL MT exam syllabus/study materials for non-Technical paper:
As can be expected for any competitive recruitment exam, there is not EIL syllabus for the non-Technical paper either. Hence you have to base your preparation on the exam pattern of other PSU’s.

My suggestion in this regards would be to base your preparation on Bank PO exams, which has exactly similar test sections as EIL non-technical paper: Quantitative Aptitude, General Awareness, Reasoning and English Language. You can find an exhaustive blog article on a recent SBI PO exam, which gives you not only the Sample papers but also books for preparation of the exam.

As had been told before, the bias in EIL non-technical paper is towards General Awareness and to some extent on test of English language. So you have to update your GK through newspapers, magazines as well websites such as Competition Master.

EIL MT Interview questions:
Once you clear the EIL written test, you have to face the EIL Interview. How do you prepare for that?
Other than the technical knowledge that you must be strong at and hence be prepared to face any question, this blog provides you an exhaustive resource on job Interview questions and you can find it here. Also in EIL MT Interview, apart from other areas, questions about EIL as an organisation are bound to be asked. So go through the about us page of the website.

I would love to receive your feedback on EIL MT written test as well as the interview. Kindly leave your feedback as a comment to this post. This would help the future examinee in knowing about the exam better.

Best wishes!

IBPS Bank Clerk CWE 2011 Dates Eligibility Forms

August 24, 2011

IBPS Clerk CWE 2011 Notification Eligibility Forms
IBPS (Institute of Banking Personnel Selection) has just today issued exam notification for Bank clerk recruitment Common Written Exam (CWE) 2011 for 19 major Public Sector banks of India. This comes close on the heels of the Common Written Exam (CWE) 2011 notification for PO (Probationary Officers), details of which can be found in my previous blog post titled: IBPS Bank PO CWE 2011 Notification Eligibility Forms.

This should come as a golden opportunity for those of you who are aspiring for a bank clerk Govt. job. Why? Because this is the first time ever that such a Common Banking Exam for recruitment of bank clerks is being organised in the history of Indian banking industry. Till last year, each of these Public Sector banks used to organize bank clerk recruitment exams separately. Just imagine the amount of effort and money you needed to apply and appear in each of the bank exams individually. Now, these effort would be reduced to a great extent as you have to appear in just one such exam – the IBPS Bank Clerk Common Written Exam 2011.

While this blog post of mine tells you in a nutshell what is IBPS CWE for bank clerks and how to apply for the same, another blog article titled: IBPS Bank Clerk CWE Exam Pattern, Sample Papers & Books would give you the prep material to prepare for this exam.

You can click here to download the IBPS Bank Clerk CWE 2011 Exam notification.

Let us begin this discussion with an orientation on what is IBPS CWE for bank clerks.

What is IBPS Bank Clerk CWE:
IBPS (Institute of Banking Personnel Selection) is the apex body for recruitment, promotion and placement services in Indian public sector banks. IBPS was established in 1975 as a unit of National Institute of Bank Management (NIBM) and it became an autonomous body in 1984. You can find more about IBPS in this About Us page.

How and why common recruitment exam is being conducted by IBPS?
It is because there is a huge manpower requirement in Indian banking sector for the next five years because of two reasons - expansion in new banking areas/new geographical terrains as well as mass retirement of existing banking personnel. If I may quote the words of M. Balachandran, Director, IBPS:
"...In the next 5 years, commercial banks will have to recruit almost 7.5 lakh people..."
You can download the detailed interview of the Director, IBPS with Businessline of the Hindu by clicking here.

As you can find in the interview, the recruitment of banking personnel is a very long process, taking up as much as 6-8 months for each individual banks. Add to it, the amount of effort and money it takes to organize the national level recruitment test. Therefore from 1st of June 2011, Indian Banks’ Association has aligned with the IBPS to hold the Common Written Examination for selection of personnel in clerical, entry level and officers’ cadre.

Will you get job based on your performance in CWE (Common Written Examination) alone?
No, what Common Written Exam has done is - it has reduced your effort in appearing the written part of recruitment process of the banks. For the further selection process (like GD/PI) of each bank individually. When any bank issues recruitment notification, you have to apply for that bank with your IBPS Clerk CWE Score. The bank will than shortlist the candidates based on CWE score and call you for further selection process, specific to that bank.

Following comparisons of bank recruitment process prior and after IBPS CWE would make you clear:
Bank Selection process prior to IBPS CWE 2011:
Bank Clerk Selection Process before IBPS CWE

Bank Selection process after IBPS CWE 2011:
Bank Clerk Selection Process after IBPS CWE
As per the notification, IBPS CWE would be conducted twice a year and you can reappear in subsequent exams to improve your scores.

In which bank you can get job after appearing in IBPS CWE 2011:
The list of Indian banks which have participated in IBPS CWE is given below:
1). Allahabad Bank
2). Andhra Bank
3). Bank of Baroda
4). Bank of India
5). Bank of Maharashtra
6). Canara Bank
7). Central Bank of India
8). Corporation Bank
9). Dena Bank
10). Indian Bank
11). Indian Overseas Bank
12). Oriental Bank of Commerce
13). Punjab National Bank
14). Punjab & Sind Bank
15). Syndicate Bank
16). Union Bank of India
17). United Bank of India
18). UCO Bank
19). Vijaya Bank
There are 21 Indian PSU banks as you can find in this webpage. So only IDBI & SBI has not participated in IBPS CWE 2011. But in the future years, they too are expected to take part.

IBPS CWE-Clerk Exam Pattern:
The exam would consist of objective type questions comprising 50 questions each from the five test sections of Reasoning, English Language, Numerical Ability, General Awareness, Computer Knowledge. Thus there would be total 250 marks to be answered in 2-&-1/2 hour.

SSC CHSL Exam Pattern Papers Books

August 23, 2011

SSC CHSL Exam Prep Material
This blog post is a sequel to an earlier blog article titled: SSC CHSL Exam 2011 Notification, Eligibility & Forms for DEO & LDC. While that article told you about SSC CHSL (Combined Higher Secondary Level Exam) notification and how to apply for this exam, this blog post tells you how to prepare for the CHSL exam by pointing you to the sources of exam papers & prep books.

Let us begin that with a discussion on the CHSL exam pattern.

CHSL exam pattern:
CHSL exam is conducted for selecting Data Entry Operators (DEO) & Lower Division Clerks (LDC) for various central Govt. organizations in India. The selection process consists of a written exam followed by skill tests. The merit is based on the marks secured in the written exam and the skill test is of qualifying nature only.
SSC CHSL Exam Pattern

The CHSL written exam is a two hour long, 200 mark objective type (i.e. Multiple choice) question exam in which there are four test sections. You can find the section-wise distribution of marks along with number of questions as given at right.

Beware! There is negative marking in CHSL exam – so make your guess answers wisely.

Skill test for Data Entry Operators in CHSL:
In the DEO skill test, you would be given printed passage in English containing 2000-2200 strokes/key-depressions which you have to enter in the computer within 15 minutes. You would be judged based on how many correct entries of the key depressions you made.
As said, this is of qualifying nature only – you just have to reach the threshold level of 8,000 Key Depressions per hour i.e. in 15 minutes, you have to make 2,000 correct key depressions.

Typing Test for LDCs in CHSL:
It is almost similar to above – but here you can take the test either in Hindi or in English. In the typing test for LDCs in CHSL, you would be given a text passage, which you have to enter correctly in 10 minutes. The speed will be judged based on how many words you could correctly type on the computer.
This again is qualifying nature only – you just have to reach the threshold level of:
1.0) If you take the test in English: 35 words per minute (10500 key depressions/hour).
2.0) If you take the test in Hindi: 30 words per minute (9000 key depressions/hour).

SC CHSL Exam Sample Papers:
I had tried hard in locating at least one good website offering Sample/Previous years exam paper of SSC Combined Higher Secondary Level Exam but failed to locate any. In absence of any reliable online CHSL exam paper, I would advise you to go through the following book:
List Price: Rs. 160; Offer Price:Rs. 144, Discount: Rs. 16 (10%)
Above book gives you 10 test papers & 2 model papers of SSC LDC/DEO exam.

Prep Books for SC CHSL Exam:
SSC CHSL Exam Prep Book
In absence of any reliable preparation/study material for CHSL exam, you have to depend on books only. You can find any of the following books from any good book stores or order them online from flipkart, which gives you huge discounts, free-shipping as well as Cash-On-Delivery facilities:

List Price: Rs. 270; Offer Price: Rs. 205; Discount: Rs. 65 (24%)

List Price: Rs. 270; Offer Price: Rs. 230; Discount: Rs. 40 (15%)

Above are the SSC CHSL exam guide books which covers all test section and hence you can use them for short-time preparation. But if you have time and would like to go for some serious study, you can go through following books, which would help you prepare for individual test sections of CHSL exam:
List Price: Rs. 200; Offer Price:Rs. 170; Discount: Rs. 30 (15%)

List Price: Rs. 340; Offer Price:Rs. 238; Discount: Rs. 102 (30%)

Numerical Ability & Quantitative Aptitude by P. K. Mittal Publisher: Galgotia
List Price: Rs. 425; Offer Price:Rs. 383; Discount: Rs. 42 (10%)

List Price: Rs. 260; Offer Price: Rs. 208; Discount: Rs. 52 (20%)

Test material for SSC CHSL Skill Test:
Once you clear the SSC written exam, you have to appear in the skill test of Data Entry Operators (DEO) & Lower Division Clerks (LDC). How do you test yourself for these typing/data entry skills ? How to improve upon your data entry skill?

To answer these questions, I had posted following two exclusive blog post for typing/data entry skill test:
Data Entry Operators Skill Test: It introduces you to the skill test.
Test Your Data Entry Skill Online/Download software: It points you to those resources which helps you test yourself.

Hope with above exam prep material you can appear confidently for the SSC CHSL exam. My best wishes! I would look for more study materials - the same papers & books for this exam and post them here when I find them. So keep visiting this blog..

CAT 2011 Exam Pattern, Syllabus & Cut-offs

August 08, 2011

CAT 2011 Exam Pattern Syllabus Cut-offs
This blog post of mine follows an earlier blog article titled: CAT 2011 Exam Dates, Eligibility & Form which tells you about how to apply for CAT (Common Admission Test). As promised on that blog article, I am putting below the pattern of CAT 2011 (yes, there is some change in CAT pattern compared to CAT 2010) as well as the syllabus of CAT. This blog post also tells you what are the CAT cut-offs, so that you have an approximate idea about how much to score in CAT to get admissions in the famed IIMs.

Without wasting time further, let us find what is the pattern of CAT exam.

CAT 2011 pattern - changes in test sections:
CAT 2011 Exam Pattern
CAT 2011 is going to have only two sections, instead of three previously. Each of the two sections would have 30 questions to be answered in 70 minutes - thus 60 questions to be answered in 140 minutes in total which gives you 2 minute 20 second to answer each question. Section-wise CAT 2011 test sections along with duration is given above. Each of the question has 3 marks. But beware! there is negative marking in CAT - minus 1 for each wrong answer!

On the other hand CAT 2010 had following three sections:
1.0 Verbal Aptitude (called as VA).
2.0 Quantitative Aptitude (called as QA)
3.0 Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (called as DI/LR)
Each sections had 20 questions - thus 60 questions to be answered in 135 minutes.

So what has changed in the pattern of CAT 2011 compared to CAT 2010?
Compared to CAT 2010, you have 5 minutes extra time. And you have two sections now instead of three previously. But than, if you see the content of the test in totality, much has not changed - QA & DI has been clubbed to give you the Section-1 of CAT 2011 while VA & LR has been clubbed to give you the Section-2. Thus if you are already making your preparation based on CAT 2010, nothing to fear about!

CAT - more accuracy based than time based test:
Over the years, number of questions asked in CAT has varied from as high as 150 in CAT 2003 to as low as 60 in CAT 2009 onwards. You can see the number of questions asked in each test section since from CAT 2003 in the table below:
CAT Exam pattern
As you can see the exam trend from CAT 2003 TO CAT 2010 and now CAT 2011, the total numbers of questions have been reduced – CAT is thus a more accuracy-based test now than a speed-based test. You are given sufficient time to answer the question correctly.

CAT 2011 test centres and CAT exam environment:
So you have to answer these 60 questions to bell the CAT – but where do you appear in this exam?

From CAT 2009 onwards, CAT has become a Computer Based Test (CBT) – it is not a paper-pencil test anymore. You have to appear the exam in the designated CAT test sites within the 36 cities/towns, list of which is given in this webpage.

Most of them are located in Engineering/Management colleges, with a few of them in schools too. All these test centers would have sufficient number of computers, being connected to a central server which would have the CAT questions. Thus, CAT exam would be a Computer Based Test (CBT) and not an Internet Based Test (IBT). You can not appear in the CAT exam from say a cyber cafe, but have to appear in the computers in the test centers only!

You can choose any date within the CAT test window period (i.e. 22nd October to 18th November 2011) and any of the two time slots (10 AM and 3:15 PM) while registering for CAT.

Let us suppose you had applied for CAT and now you are in the CAT test site, sitting in front of the computer where you are going to take the exam. What are you going to see when the test starts? How does a CAT CBT look like? You can find an actual CAT test environment from this demo CAT, provided by Prometric who is conducting the exam on behalf of IIMs.

This demo CAT gives you an actual user experience, where you can get to know the test screens with the function of buttons – “Next”, “Mark, “Review”, Familiarity of these CAT test screens is going to help you a lot while taking the actual exam.

CAT 2011 Syllabus:
IIMs do not prescribe any syllabus for CAT – it merely states that “The test consists of questions that evaluate a candidate’s quantitative, verbal, and logical & data interpretation abilities”.

So in absence of an official CAT syllabus how do you prepare for the exam? You can do this by finding what sorts of questions are asked in each of the three sections of CAT. Following is a test section-wise compilation of the type of questions asked in CAT.

CAT Syllabus for Verbal Aptitude section:
English usage: Inappropriate Usage, Contextual meaning, Para jumbles, Sentence completion, Sentence correction, Fill in the Blanks, Verbal Reasoning, Paragraph Completion.
Reading Comprehension:Politics, History & Mythology, Sociology and Linguistics, Fiction / Non-fiction, Philosophy & Law, Art & Culture.

CAT Syllabus for Quantitative Aptitude section:
Arithmetic: Number system, Percentage, SI-CI, PLD, Averages, Ratio proportion, Speed Time Distance, Work.
Algebra: Equations & Inequalities, Functions & graphs, Maxima minima, Series, sequences & progressions & logs.
Geometry: Plane geometry (Lines, angles, Triangles, Spheres, Rectangles, Cube, Cone etc), Mensuration, Co-ordinate geometry, Trigonometry.

CAT Syllabus for Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning section:
Logical Based Table, Calculations based Table, Logic based Caselet, Column graphs, Bar Graphs, Line charts, Pie Chart, Graphs representing Area, Venn Diagram, Logic based Graph.

Puzzles, Syllogisms, Functions, Family tree - identifying relationship among group of people, Symbol Based problems, Coding and decoding , Sequencing , identifying next number in series, etc.

Critical reasoning, Visual reasoning, Assumption-Premise-Conclusion, Assertion and reasons, Statements and assumptions, identifying valid inferences , identifying Strong arguments and Weak arguments, Statements and conclusions, Cause and Effect, Identifying Probably true, Probably false, definitely true, definitely false kind of statement, Linear arrangements, Matrix arrangements

This syllabus and exam pattern is being posted for CAT 2011. But even the future CAT examinees can also use it as the reference syllabus for CAT 2012 & CAT 2013, as not much changes is expected in these two years.

From above, you can find what types of questions are asked. But how to find examples of above types of CAT questions? You can find it in my next blog post titled: CAT prep materials - CAT mock test website list, where you can find the sample/previous years papers of CAT test. Please visit this blog again!
