Indian Navy SSB Interview Prep material

June 26, 2011

Indian Navy SSB Interview Prep material
Indian Navy recruits in officer cadre through various schemes like 10+2 Tech Entry, University Entry scheme etc. While written test is conducted for Permanent Commission recruitment (like 10+2 Tech Entry), there is no written test for Short Service Commission (SSC) recruitment(like UES- University Entry scheme).

But irrespective of whether there is written test, there is SSB Interview for all type of recruitment. What is SSB Interview and how to prepare for it? This is the subject matter of this blog post and it follows two of my previous blog articles:

This blog article reproduces the content of this SSB Interview Instruction manual by Indian Navy as well as from scores of other websites like youtube videos, to help you know and prepare for the same as well as to archive it for future Indian Navy aspirants. List of Prep/Guide books, coaching institutes for SSB Interview is given towards the end of this blog post.

An over view of Indian Navy SSB Interview:
SSB Interview for Indian Navy is conducted for 5 days in Bhopal, Bangalore or Coimbatore. There are two stages in SSB Interview – Stage-1 & Stage-2.

Stage-1 is only for one day and at the end of it, result is declared. Only those who succeed in Stage-1 are retained for Stage-2 SSB Interview and rest are asked to leave.

Stage-2 of SSB Interview consists of 4 days (Day 2 to 5) in which Psychological test, Group test and personal Interview is conducted. Detailed Day-wise SSB Interview process is given below:

Stage-1 of SSB Interview: on Day 1.
Stage one selection system includes the following
(i) Intelligence Test.
Verbal Test (Basic Knowledge of English).
Non- Verbal Test (Basic Knowledge of Logical Maths and Numbers).

(ii) Picture Perception and Description Test (PDPT).
Picture is flashed for 30 Seconds. The candidate have to broadly note down seven basic parameters viz number of characters, age, sex, mood, action relating to past, present and future for each character in one minute.

(iii) Discussion of the Picture – 30 Minutes.
In this phase the candidates are divided into different groups. Strength of group is around 15 candidates. Each candidate narrates his individual written story verbatim. Subsequently, in Part –II all the candidates have to come to discuss amongst themselves and achieve a common consensus about the characters and theme of the story.

As told above, Stage-1 of the SSB Interview is a screening stage - the result is declared and only those who succeed are asked to stay back for Stage-2 from Day-2 onwards.

Stage-2 of SSB Interview:
SSB Interview Day 2: Psychological Tests
SSB Psychological Tests consists of following tests:
(i) Thematic Apperception Test (TAT): 12 Pictures including one blank are shown for 30 sec each. Candidates are asked to write a story around what led to the situation? What is going on and what would be the outcome? Picture is shown for 30 seconds and they are asked to write it in 4 minutes. In the blank slide, they have to think a picture of their own choice and to write a story around that.
(ii) Word Association Test (WAT): In this test, a series of 60 words are shown to the candidates one after another for 15 seconds each. The candidate is required to write down the first thought or idea comes to his mind.
(iii) Situation Reaction Test (SRT):This test consists of 60 routine life situations regarding day to day activities. The situations are printed in a booklet and the candidate is asked to write his reactions by completing the sentences, as to how they would feel, think and act up these situations.
(iv) Self Description-15 Mins: Candidate is asked to write five separate paragraphs on each context about the opinion of his parents/guardian, friends, teachers/ superiors.

SSB Interview Day 3: 1st day of GTO.
This includes the following:-
(i) Group Discussion: Two topics of common interest (social issues and current events) are discussed. It is an informal discussion and not a debate. Each topic is allotted 20 minutes each. No definite conclusion is required to be deduced.
(ii) Group Planning Exercise (GPE): It comprises of five stages viz, explanation of the model, reading of the narrative by GTO, five minutes for self reading by candidates, 10 minutes for individual written solutions and 20 minutes for group discussion. Narration of the group solution and definite conclusion is required.
(iii) Progressive Group Tasks(PGT): It is the first outdoor task. A set of four obstacles with progressively increasing level of difficulties are to be completed in 40 to 50 minutes. Structures, helping material and load are provided to the group.
(iv) Group Obstacle Race (GOR): In this task the group is pitched against each other over a set of six obstacles with a snake like load to carry.
(v) Half Group Task (HGT); It has one obstacle similar to progressive group task with helping material and load to be carried. Group is divided into two Sub Groups and assigned the same obstacle in turn in such a way that when one group is working, the other is not allowed to watch it. Time allotted to each sub group is 15 minutes.

GATE 2012 & GATE 2013 Probable Dates

What is the exam date of GATE 2012? When is the GATE 2012 Exam notification coming out? From which date GATE 2012 application form would be issued? These are the most common questions many reader of this blog are asking me since from the date GATE 2011 was over on 13th Feb, 2011.

Some of these readers had appeared in GATE 2011 but may not have done well and therefore wants to appear in GATE 2012 again. The remaining readers are those who would appear for the first time in GATE 2012.

It is for this targeted audience that this blog post is being made – to let them know about the likely exam dates of GATE 2012, based on exam-date trend analysis of last four GATE exams – GATE 2008 to GATE 2011. Let me tell you at the outset that these are only projected dates (to help you make a study plan) and hence you have to check in the GATE site nearer notification time.

At first let me tell you that GATE exam notification always comes out on the 3rd Saturday of September month, nearing 20th September. So on the basis of this, GATE 2012 exam notification should come out on 17th September, 2011 – again a Saturday. Why does it come out in Saturdays? Well, it is because GATE notification is published among others, in “Employment News” – which is a weekly, coming out in every Saturdays.

The Offline forms are issued and online form submission starts about 2/3 days from the date of notification. So accordingly GATE 2012 application form should be issued somewhere around 20th September, 2011. Last date of form submission is approximately 1 month from the date of issue of forms.

GATE exam is always held on the 2nd Sunday of February. So GATE 2012 exam should be held on 12th February, 2012. Similarly, GATE exam result is always announced on 15th March of that year – so GATE 2012 exam result should be announced on 15th March, 2012.

How I arrived at those GATE 2012 dates? You can find from exam date trend analysis of last four GATE exam dates as below: (click to enlarge)
You can similarly find the GATE 2013 exam dates as below:
Date of GATE 2013 exam notification: 15th September, 2012.
Date of GATE 2013 exam: 10th February, 2013.
Date of GATE 2013 result: 15th March, 2013.

Nearer the exam notification date, check on following GATE websites for exact dates:

Why to check IIT websites for GATE exam dates? Because the seven IITs & the IISC Bangalore constitutes the National Coordination Board, GATE and one of them conducts the GATE exam on behalf of NCB, GATE, like IIT Chennai was the organizing institute for GATE 2011.

How to prepare for GATE 2012 – the study materials:
If you are a GATE-2012 aspirant, you may want to know what is the syllabus of GATE 2012as well as GATE 2012 structure (the exam pattern). Also you would naturally want somesample papers for GATE 2012 preparation.

Check back later in this blog for GATE 2012 notification as well as for more study materials!

Best wishes!
