IFS exam pattern, syllabus, papers & books

UPSC IFS Exam Pattern Sample Papers Books
This blog post is made as a sequel to two of my previous post titled: Indian Forest Service (IFS) exam: an Introduction & IFS exam 2011 Notification, Eligibility & Forms which tells you what is an IFS (Indian Forest Service) exam as well as how to apply for it.

This blog post focuses on what is the pattern of IFS exam and also gives you the sources for downloading IFS exam syllabus

IFS exam plan/pattern:
IFS exam selection process consists of a written test, followed by Interview for those selected in the written test.

IFS written test consists of following papers:
Paper I: General English: 300 marks.
Paper II: General Knowledge: 300 marks.
Optional Papers:
Paper III: 200 marks.
Paper IV: 200 marks.
Paper V: 200 marks.
Paper VI: 200 marks.
Total: 1400 marks

IFS interview carries 300 marks.

Optional Papers:
In the Optional Papers of IFS exam, you need to choose two subjects, each of which would have two papers and contain eight questions, from which five questions are to be answered in three hours.

Following illustration would help you understand question distribution of each paper:
Paper-I: There are total eight questions (in two parts), out of which five questions are to be answered. Each question carries equal marks.
Part-A: Q1 to Q4, out of which one is compulsory. Out of the remaining three, you must choose at least one.
Part-B: Q1 to Q4, out of which one is compulsory. Out of the remaining three, you must choose at least one.
Thus you will have to attempt two questions (including compulsory question) from one part and three questions from the other part.

IFS exam syllabus for General English and General Knowledge:
For English & GK paper, no syllabus has been prescribed by UPSC for IFS exam. However as per the IFS exam notification, the questions are of that standard, which can be answered by a Science or an Engineering graduate from an Indian university. Further, UPSC has given following guidelines for preparation of these two papers:

General English:
Candidates will be required to write an essay in English. Other questions will be designed to test their understanding of English and workmanlike use of words. Passages will usually be set for summary or précis.

General Knowledge:
General Knowledge including knowledge of current events and of such matters of every day observation and experience in their scientific aspects as may be expected of an educated person who has not made a special study of any scientific subject. The paper will also include questions on Indian Polity including the political system and the Constitution of India, History of India and Geography of a nature which the candidate should be able to answer without special study.

IFS exam syllabus for optional subjects:
As per UPSC IFS exam notification, the scope of the syllabus for optional subject papers for the examination is broadly of the Honours Degree level i.e. a level higher than the Bachelors Degree and lower than the Masters Degree. In the case of engineering subjects, the level corresponds to the Bachelors Degree.

NABARD DA Exam Pattern, Sample papers & Books

March 13, 2011

NABARD Development Assistant Exam Sample papers
NABARD few days back had issued recruitment notification 2011 for 162 Development Assistants including 5 Pharmacists, details of which can be found in my previous blog post titled: NABARD Recruitment 2011: Notification, Eligibility & Forms. While that article tells you how to apply for these positions, the focus of this particular blog post is on how to prepare for NABARD DA (Development Assistant) Exam by first telling you what is the Exam pattern and than give you the study materials: sample papers and preparatory books for NABARD DA Exam.

NABARD DA exam pattern:
Selection process for Development Assistants in NABARD consists of two stages: 250 mark written test followed by interview. The written test consists of two papers - Paper-I (Objective) & Paper-II (Descriptive).

NABARD written test pattern Paper-I (Objective) :
NABARD DA exam pattern
i) General Intelligence
ii) Test of English Language
iii) Test of Numerical Ability
iv) Test of Clerical and Computer Aptitude.
Each of above section has 50 questions, each question worth 1 mark. Thus the Paper-I (Objective tests) consists of 200 questions carrying 200 marks which has to be answered in total 95 Minutes Duration.
There is -ve marking: 0.25 marks will be deducted for each wrong answer. So make your guesses wisely!

NABARD written test pattern Paper-II (Descriptive) :
Paper II is again a test of General English for testing analytical and drafting ability of a candidate through precise/ letter/ report writing etc. There are 3 compulsory questions worth 50 marks to be answered in 60 minutes.

As you can see, this NABARD exam pattern is exactly similar to pattern of bank clerical exam, with same test sections and same distribution of marks. Hence you can use the sample papers of bank clerical exams for preparation of NABARD DA (Development Assistant) Exam.

Online sample/model/mock-test papers for NABARD DA Exam:
Your first study material for the NABARD DA Exam should be the online papers available in various websites. Since you may be having limited time, I searched in the net to find these free online papers for the Bank Clerical exam. Although these papers are not exclusive to NABARD DA (Development Assistant) Exam, I think you would find the materials useful.

I found that Competition Master is an excellent resource which has good collection of online papers for these exams:

NABARD DA Exam Sample Paper:
Test of Clerical Aptitude:

Clerical Aptitude tests your ability to notice similarities and differences between pairs of names and numbers. Questions asked also assesses ability to handle office routine work, like filing, abbreviating, indexing etc. Following links should help you prepare for it:

Personality-and-aptitude-career-tests

NABARD DA Exam Sample Paper:
Computer knowledge test
UPSC Portal has a good collection of 100 sample questions for Computer General Knowledge For Bank Examination. You can view this sample paper here.
Way2Freshers has also a similar sample question paper on SBI Clerk computer knowledge. Click here to view the same.

Following book would also help you to prepare for the test section on Computer knowledge:

Apart from Competition Master, I also found these websites offering sample papers for Bank Clerical exams:
Allinterview: It gives 130 model questions with answers.
Allexam: It gives 25 SBI Bank Clerk GK model questions with answers.
Upscportal: It gives you 20 Allahabad Bank model questions.
Upscportal: General Awareness sample Question Paper 2008: 40 Q
Edutalkindia: Numerical Ability/Maths samle Paper: 40 Q

Books for NABARD DA Exam:
While the above on-line exam papers should be treated as eye-openers, you need to lay more emphasis on the preparatory books. I found following list of books available on the net.

Bank Clerk Exam Book
You can buy any of the books, as the clerical exam pattern is similar in all of the Public sector industries. These books are available in most of the bookstores, but you can also order them online by clicking the links below, from Flipkart.com which offers hugediscounts from 10% to 20%, apart from free shipping/postage in India if the order exceeds Rs. 100/=. With above, I am confident that you would be able to qualify in the NABARD DA (Development Assistant) Exam. But how should you prepare for the Interview?

Prep material for Interview of NABARD DA Exam:
