 NTPC every year issues notification for recruitment of engineer trainees (ET). Just like 520 ET vacancies in 2011, NTPC has issued recruitment notification for 300 Engineering Executive Trainees for the year 2012 too, from the disciplines of Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Instrumentation & Electronics.
What are the eligibilities and how to apply for these engineer trainee positions in NTPC? This is the subject matter of current blog article.
But before we go further, a small introduction on NTPC.
What is NTPC: NTPC (National Thermal Power Corporation) is one of the five Maharatna PSU in India – it is India’s largest power company, producing 1/3rd of total power generation in India through its 22 power stations (15 coal based & 7 gas based) with an installed capacity of 34,845 MW. It also ranks as 348th in Forbes ‘Global 2000’ list of companies.
In 2008, it ranked as No. 1 in 'Best Workplaces for Large Organizations' and eighth overall by Great Places to Work in collaboration with the Economic Times.
Change in NTPC ET Recruitment process: From 2012 onwards, there has been a major change in how NTPC is going to recruit Engineer Trainees - till 2011, NTPC used to conduct its own Written recruitment test which was of 2 hour duration having two papers: Aptitude & Technical. The selection process for ET was hence: Written Test -> GD/Interview.
But from 2012 onwards NTPC is not going to conduct the written test itself - it is going to use the GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) scores to shortlist the candidates for its further selection process. The changed selection process form now onwards would be GATE-> GD/Interview.
Hence for the ET positions in NTPC from now onwards, you have to appear in GATE relevant to your discipline and do well in the same, so that you can be shorlisted by NTPC for GD & Interview.
Branch-wise NTPC ET vacancies for 2012: A total of 300 ET vacancies exists: Electrical(112), Mechanical(89), Civil(38), Instrumentation(31), Electronics(30).
NTPC ET Salary: Salaries offered by NTPC for ET is: pay scale of Rs. 24900-50500 at the basic pay of Rs. 24900/- during one-year training and than basic pay of Rs. 25650/-, after completion of the training period. This is apart from other benefits.
Eligibility for NTPC Engineer Trainee :Age Eligibility: For ET: Maximum 27 years as on 01.01.2012. Age relaxations exists for reserved categories.
Educational Eligibility: For ET: Minimum: 55% marks for SC, ST and Physically Challenged & 65% marks for others.. If you are a Final year / semester student than you may also apply.

How to apply for NTPC ET Recruitment 2012: You have to register (i.e. apply) actually twice for NTPC ET positions, since GATE score is mandatory from 2012 onwards: Once for GATE & than for NTPC.
First you have to apply online for GATE 2012. How to apply for for GATE has been described in detail in this webpage. Last date for applying online for GATE 2012 is now 21st October, 2012. So better hurry!
Subsequent to your online registration for GATE, you would be able to download the GATE 2012 Admit card from 2nd January, 2012 onwards. Now you have to use the "GATE-2012 Registration Number" as given in the admit card to register online for NTPC ET Recruitment 2012.
The NTPC ET Recruitment 2012 Online form would be available from 6th January-2012 till 26th January-2012 in this NTPC Career website.  How to apply online for the NTPC recruitment is described clearly in section "HOW TO APPLY:" of the NTPC job advertisement for Executive Trainees 2012.
IMPORTANT NTPC ET Recruitment 2012 DATES: Last date of online registration for GATE: 21.10.2011. Date of availability of GATE 2012 Admit Card (hence GATE-2012 Registration Number): 02.01.2012. Start date of online registration for NTPC ET Recruitment 2012: 06.01.2012. Last date of online registration for NTPC ET Recruitment 2012: 26.01.2012. Date of GATE-2012 exam: 12.02.2012.
Subsequent to your online registration for ET positions, NTPC would procure the GATE scores from GATE authority, shortlist the candidates and if you are within the merit list, would call you for the subsequent selection process - that is Group Discussion & Personal Interview.
