IBPS (Institute of Banking Personnel Selection) has just today issued exam notification for Bank clerk recruitment Common Written Exam (CWE) 2011 for 19 major Public Sector banks of India. This comes close on the heels of the Common Written Exam (CWE) 2011 notification for PO (Probationary Officers), details of which can be found in my previous blog post titled: IBPS Bank PO CWE 2011 Notification Eligibility Forms.
This should come as a golden opportunity for those of you who are aspiring for a bank clerk Govt. job. Why? Because this is the first time ever that such a Common Banking Exam for recruitment of bank clerks is being organised in the history of Indian banking industry. Till last year, each of these Public Sector banks used to organize bank clerk recruitment exams separately. Just imagine the amount of effort and money you needed to apply and appear in each of the bank exams individually. Now, these effort would be reduced to a great extent as you have to appear in just one such exam – the IBPS Bank Clerk Common Written Exam 2011. While this blog post of mine tells you in a nutshell what is IBPS CWE for bank clerks and how to apply for the same, another blog article titled: IBPS Bank Clerk CWE Exam Pattern, Sample Papers & Books would give you the prep material to prepare for this exam. You can click here to download the IBPS Bank Clerk CWE 2011 Exam notification. Let us begin this discussion with an orientation on what is IBPS CWE for bank clerks.
What is IBPS Bank Clerk CWE:
IBPS (Institute of Banking Personnel Selection) is the apex body for recruitment, promotion and placement services in Indian public sector banks. IBPS was established in 1975 as a unit of National Institute of Bank Management (NIBM) and it became an autonomous body in 1984. You can find more about IBPS in this About Us page.
How and why common recruitment exam is being conducted by IBPS? It is because there is a huge manpower requirement in Indian banking sector for the next five years because of two reasons - expansion in new banking areas/new geographical terrains as well as mass retirement of existing banking personnel. If I may quote the words of M. Balachandran, Director, IBPS: "...In the next 5 years, commercial banks will have to recruit almost 7.5 lakh people..." You can download the detailed interview of the Director, IBPS with Businessline of the Hindu by clicking here.
As you can find in the interview, the recruitment of banking personnel is a very long process, taking up as much as 6-8 months for each individual banks. Add to it, the amount of effort and money it takes to organize the national level recruitment test. Therefore from 1st of June 2011, Indian Banks’ Association has aligned with the IBPS to hold the Common Written Examination for selection of personnel in clerical, entry level and officers’ cadre.
Will you get job based on your performance in CWE (Common Written Examination) alone? No, what Common Written Exam has done is - it has reduced your effort in appearing the written part of recruitment process of the banks. For the further selection process (like GD/PI) of each bank individually. When any bank issues recruitment notification, you have to apply for that bank with your IBPS Clerk CWE Score. The bank will than shortlist the candidates based on CWE score and call you for further selection process, specific to that bank.
Following comparisons of bank recruitment process prior and after IBPS CWE would make you clear: Bank Selection process prior to IBPS CWE 2011:
Bank Selection process after IBPS CWE 2011: As per the notification, IBPS CWE would be conducted twice a year and you can reappear in subsequent exams to improve your scores.
