NTSE (National Talent Search Examination) Exam
|
|
July 30, 2010
|
|
|
|
NTSE (National Talent Search Examination) is a very prestigious school-level scholarship exam conducted by NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training) every year in the month of May, notification for which is issued in the July month of previous year.
As per Wiki, Close to 1,50,000 students appear in this scholarship exam every year, in which only 1000 gets the scholarship - thus only 1 in every 150 is ultimately selected - the acceptance rate is only 0.67%! Compare this with the acceptance rate of Ivy League institutes like Harvard –7.1% (22,955 students applied, 2,058 accepted), Yale – 8.3%... source: NY Times.
Above means that getting a seat in Harvard is easier than getting the NTSE scholarship!
This blog post is introductory in nature and would focus on What is NTSE and Why NTSE. In four subsequent blog posts, I would cover:
What is NTSE?
NTSE is a very prestigious exam held by NCERT every year to identify bright young Indian minds (studying in India as well as in abroad) and offer scholarships right from Class-VIII onwards till he/she completes Ph.D. In fact it is one of the very few Catch-Them-Young programs launched by Government, which has been a resounding success.
NTSE has been conducted for the last 47 years by NCERT – It was started for only Delhi in 1963 and was called National Science Talent Search Scheme (NSTSS). In 1964, it was extended to all the state/union territories. Thus NTSE is almost as old as NCERT, which came into existence in 1961.
Why NTSE?
i) Instant recognition:
As said, NTSE is a very prestigious exam and once you clear it, you get instant recognition at a very young age. When you grow older and write your own resume for jobs/admissions etc., credential of a NTSE scholar puts you far ahead of others.
ii) Monetary benefits:
You can self-support some of your study cost with the scholarship amount of Rs.500/= right from Class-VIII till PhD. While in PhD, you get scholarship as per UGC norms.
iii) Exposure to a National Level Test:
Yes, this is the greatest reason why you should go for NTSE. At the very young age of 12/13, you are exposed to a National Level Test! Since the exam is very competitive and you have to pass through written test as well as Interview at so young an age, when you attempt NTSE, you are groomed automatically for the future exams like IAS, CAT, GRE etc. It is very rare to find a NTSE scholar who has not succeeded in his further careers. Thus regardless of whether you clear NTSE, you should at least make an attempt, just for the experience.
Therefore you should appear NTSE – for recognition, for money and as well as for the experience.
How much is the NTSE scholarship amount:
The amount is Rs. 500/= per month from Class-VIII till:
1.0 Ph.D. level (for the courses in Basic Sciences, Social Sciences and Commerce)
2.0 Post Graduation level (for professional courses like Engineering, Medicine, Management and Law).
What is the Exam Pattern of NTSE?
NTSE is a two stage scholarship exam:
Stage-1) State Level: Written Test only for the purpose of screening qualifying students.
Stage-2) National Level: Written Test followed by Interview.
State Level examination is conducted by each State/UT to screen out students and to recommend the qualifying students to NCERT for the National Level examination. NCERT than conducts the National Level examination.
Thus after NCERT brings out the advertisement regarding NTSE along with the application form, the whole responsibility of the exam shifts to State Level.
At State Level, the particular Liaison Officers accepts the application forms, conducts the State Level examination and than recommends the list of qualifying students to NCERT. So for all purposes after you Download the application form for State Level NTSE Examination, till you are called by NCERT for the written test of National Level examination, you have a single point of contact – the NTSE Liaison Officer of the state you belong to. What is the address & phone number of the Liaison Officer of your state? Click here to find it!
Hope above introductory information on NTSE exam helped you in knowing about the exam in a nutshell. In my continuing blog post, I would cover "NTSE Exam Dates, Eligibility & Forms" to help you apply for the exam and "NTSE Syllabus & Exam Pattern" as well as "NTSE Sample Papers & Books" to help you prepare for the NTSE exam. Do keep visiting this blog!

SSC DEO exam Syllabus, Sample Papers & Books
|
|
July 18, 2010
|
|
|
|
The focus of this blog post is on to help you prepare for the SSC Data Entry Operator Exam by giving you the study materials – sample papers & books along with an analysis of the exam pattern.
If you had not gone through my previous blog post, let me tell you that eligibilities for SSC DEO (Data Entry Operator) exam are very simple:
i) You need to be Class-XII pass or equivalent.
ii) You need to possess a typing speed of minimum 8000 KDPH (Key Depressions per hour).
With that let us go on to find the exam pattern of SSC DEO exam.
SSC Data Entry Operator Exam pattern:
Selection process for SSC DEO positions consists of two stages:
Stage-1: Written test.
Stage-2: Skill test.
SSC Written test pattern:
SSC written test consists of a single paper of 200 objective type questions, each with 1 mark, which has to be answered in 2 hours. The test subjects, along with the distribution of marks can be seen at the right hand side.
SSC Skill test pattern:
On being selected in the written test (i.e. Stage-1); you have to appear in the SSC skill test – which is nothing but a test of your typing skill on the computer. You need to just clear this exam, by typing with minimum speed of 8000 KDPH. The SSC skill test is only qualifying in nature.
SSC Data Entry Operator Exam cut-off marks:
How much mark should you score in the SSC written test to qualify? In other words what is the cut-off mark for SSC DEO exam? This question may be bugging you. So I did a detailed analysis on the last two years cut-off marks and the results are as below:

As you could find, for General (i.e. UR) category you need to score around 80% to qualify in the SSC written test, while for Ex-servicemen (EXS) category, 60% marks is sufficient. These cut-offs are relative and varies from year to year (DEO 2009 cutoff was higher that DEO 2008 exam) and hence the above cut-offs are just to give you some idea.
SSC Data Entry Operator Exam Sample papers:
You may be searching for some sample papers for SSC DEO exam. I have searched for these sample/model papers on the net but could not find any authentic papers.
But SSC DEO exam is very similar to Bank Clerical exam papers with papers for “General Intelligence” very akin to “Test of Reasoning” and “Arithmetic” paper similar to “Numerical Aptitude”. Hence you can use these exam papers as sample papers for SSC Data Entry Operator Exam.
Based on above, let me point you to the following bank clerical papers of Competition Master:
SSC DEO Exam Sample Paper - General Intelligence:
SSC DEO Exam Sample Paper - General Awareness:
SSC DEO Exam Sample Paper - Test of English:
SSC DEO Exam Sample Paper – Arithmetic:

RPH Publication Price: Rs. 230/=
Test material for SSC Data Entry Skill Test:
Once you clear the SSC DEO written exam, you have to appear in the skill test of SSC DEO exam. What skills are tested? How do you test yourself for skills even before the DEO exam? How to improve upon your data entry skill?
To answer these questions, I had posted following two exclusive blog post for Data Entry Operation skill test:

Test Your Data Entry Skill Online/Download software
|
|
July 13, 2010
|
|
|
|
This blog post follows an earlier blog article titled: Data Entry Operators Skill Test, which introduced you to the Skill test for data entry operators. That post also asked you whether you would like to test yourself for your data entry skill. If you are, please read on – this blog post gives you the sources of 3 online testing websites as well as 2 downloadable data entry test software.
The difference between online data entry testing websites and downloadable data entry test software is that - for online tests, you have to remain connected to the internet while appearing in the test while in downloadable software’s, after you download the software and install the same, you can practice them in your own machine without being connected to the net.
I have tested all these websites/software’s one by one and found them to be very good ones. Here are they:
Websites for online testing of Data Entry Skill test: Learn2type.com This website has a very easy & clean interface and you can practice your data entry skill immediately
TypeOnline.co.uk: In numerical speed Test: My speed was: 22wpm.. In test with words: My speed was: 26wpm. In test with Words & Numbers: My speed was: 20wpm.
TypingTest.com This is another good website, where you can choose test of 1 minute, 2 minute & 3 minute duration. Gives you your typing speed in words per minute (wpm) as well as character per minute (cpm). My speed was 27 WPM, 136 CPM.
Websites for downloading software’s for Data Entry Skill test
TypingMaster.com: A very good software, with ease of use. Just download this 8.4 Mb file, install the same and test your data entry speed in your own machine. Gives you the result in wpm as well as cpm.
DataEntrytTest2009: Another very good downloadable Data Entry Skill test software. Use this link to download the software and if it fails, use this link. For initial 30 days, it is free. Beyond that you have to purchase price the same - $28 for each computer you wish to use the program on. The file size is small – 882 KB only, so it downloads fast and is easy to install.
I got following results by testing in DataEntrytTest2009: Gross keystrokes per hour: 5073.38 Net keystrokes per hour: 5053.40 Accuracy: 99.61 Duration (minutes): 3.00 Total keystrokes: 254 Keystroke errors: 1 Total fields: 29 Total field errors: 1 Keyed;5228793 On Record;52287903
So that’s it. I hope you would find the above data entry test tools useful and use the same to enhance your data entry skill. As a data entry operator, not only you can go for a permanent job, but you can also take up data entry jobs from your home as a freelancer by using websites such as Freelancer.com.
Best wishes! And please let me know how many of you could beat my data entry records given above!

Data Entry Operators Skill Test
|
|
July 12, 2010
|
|
|
|
There are a number of Data Entry Operator recruitment exams in which the skill test for data entry operation invariably is a part of the selection process. What is this skill test for data entry? What are the different parameters used for measuring the speed of data entry?
This is the subject matter of this blog post – it would tell you about the Data Entry Operators Skill Test in a nutshell and than go onto give you the sources where you can not only test your data entry skill but also improve upon the same through practice in another blog post titled: Test Your Data Entry Skill Online/Download software.
Who is a Data Entry Operator? A data entry operator is an individual who transforms an unorganized set of data into an organized format of data. This unorganized set of data may be in the form of text, image or video which is organized into the required format – unorganized text into organized text (just like an invoice clerk keys in manual invoice data into a computer database), unorganized image into organized image or even text (by using software like OCR), unorganized video into organized video (video-editing etc.).
You can get an idea about what all data entry jobs are done from this Freelancer Data Entry job availability. As you can find from it, out of all the data entry jobs, most prevalent is Textual Data Entry and this is the subject matter of this blog post.
What skill is tested for a Data Entry Operator? The only skill tested for a data entry operator is: How fast, how accurately you can key-in (i.e. type) the data.
Data Entry Operator skill test terminologies: Following terms are used to define a data entry operation skill:
WPM (Words per minute): How many words you can type in one minute?
CPM (Characters per minute): How many characters you can type in one minute?
KPH or KSPH (Key Strokes per Hour) or KDPH (Key Depressions per Hour): How many keys you have used in typing a given text (alpha/numeric or alpha-numeric) in one hour? This is the most accurate data entry skill test.
How to convert WPM into KPH/KDPH and vice vesra: In most typing tests, a "word" is defined as five keystrokes. That is: KPH = WPM x 5 x 60 = 300 x WPM WPM = KPH / 300.
What should be your data entry speed? What is the average typing speed? What should be your typing speed to become a data entry operator? These are the questions that must be bugging you now.
Well, an average person types 20 to 25 wpm. For the professional data entry operators, the average speed is around 36 wpm (10800 KPH). But the minimum typing speed defined in most of the data entry operator skill test is 8000 KPH (i.e. 27 WPM).
