UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) has just recently brought out the IES exam 2011 notification, details about which can be found in my previous blog post titled: IES exam 2011 Notification, Eligibility & Forms. The post tells you about the notification, what are the eligibilities for IES exam as well as where to find those forms.
The purpose of this blog post is to help those Civil Engineers who would appear in this IES exam, with study materials for the IES exam - Pattern, Syllabus, Papers & Books.
Although this blog post is made for IES-2011 exam, aspirants of even the future IES exam would find the contents useful – the materials - Pattern, Syllabus, Sample papers & Books can also be used as study materials for IES exam 2012, IES exam2013 as well as future IES exams as a major change is very less likely to happen.
IES Exam Pattern for Electronics Engineers:
IES exam consists of a total 1200 mark selection process, which consists of a written test for 1000 marks and a 200 mark Interview for those shortlisted. Out of the total 1000 marks in the written test, 600 marks are for Objective test and 400 marks for Conventional test.
Plan of IES written test along with mark distribution paper-wise is given below:
IES Objective Test Papers: 600 marks
General Ability Test: 2 hrs duration: 200 marks
Electronics Engineering Paper I: 2 hrs duration: 200 marks
Electronics Engineering Paper II: 2 hrs duration: 200 marks
General Ability Test consists of: Part A: General English & Part B: General Studies.
There are 120 questions in each of the above three papers – thus you have one minute for each question of average worth 1.67 marks.
Objective type test consists of multiple-choice questions with four options, in which you have to choose the correct option and mark the same in the answer booklet with an HB pencil, by darkening the circle (representing the correct option) completely. The answer booklet is an OMR (Optical Mark Recognition) sheet, which looks like the one below: Negative marking:
Beware - for each wrong answer of a question, one third (0.33) of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted as penalty. Hence encircle the correct answer properly and also make wise-guesses!
IES Conventional Test Papers: 400 marks
Electronics Engineering Paper I: 3 hrs duration: 200 marks
Electronics Engineering Paper II: 3 hrs duration: 200 marks
These papers consists of descriptive (i.e. essay) type questions.
Depending on the relative performance by the IES candidates, UPSC decides the cut-off (minimum qualifying marks) in the Objective test and the papers of Conventional test is evaluated only for those above this cut-off. IES exam cut-off in the Objective test is approximately 60%.
IES Exam Syllabus for Electronics Engineers:

Combined Graduate Level exam Pattern
|
|
January 26, 2010
|
|
|
|
With effect from Combined Graduate Level examination 2010, SSC (Staff Selection Commission) has brought in several changes in the pattern/format of Combined Graduate Level examination. This blog post intends to bring to you those changes as well as tell you the pattern of Combined Graduate Level examination for individual posts. As the pattern has changed, so has the syllabus for Combined Graduate Level examination, which you can find it here.
Changes in the Combined Graduate Level examination pattern/format: The changes which have been brought by SSC in Combined Graduate Level examination 2010 can be categorized as follows: 1.0 Single application for multiple posts. 2.0 Multiple-tier selection process. 3.0 Objective type questions. Let us go into details of these changes.
1.0 Single application for multiple posts: Prior to Combined Graduate Level examination 2010, there used to be a number of similar examinations conducted by SSC as given below: (i) Combined Graduate Level Exam. (ii) Tax Assistant Exam. (iii) Section Officer (Commercial Audit) Exam. (iv) Section Officer (Audit) Exam. (v) Complier (for O/o RGI) Exam. (vi) Statistical Investigator Grade-II (for M/o Statistics & Prog. Implementation) Exam. (vii) Sub-Inspector in CPOs Exam. Prior to 2010, you were supposed to apply for each exam separately. Now w.e.f. 2010, with a single application, you would be able to appear in Combined Graduate Level examination 2010 for all of these posts.
2.0 Multiple-tier selection process: With effect from Combined Graduate Level examination 2010, the selection process would be multi-tiered. Tier-I is common to all posts and would be used for screening purpose. Tier-II is specific to posts for which you apply/given your preference while Tier-III is Interview – the last stage. For the posts of Divisional Accountant, Auditor, Accountant, UDCs & Tax Assistant there is no Tier-III (i.e. Interview).
3.0 Objective type questions: Type of questions asked from Combined Graduate Level examination 2010 would be Objective type – in both Tier-I as well as Tier-II.
As you can see above, there are a lot of advantages for the examinees – with a single application you can apply to all these posts for which previously you had to appear in separate exams. Also objective type questions is much better than descriptive questions to appear.
The following exams pattern of Combined Graduate Level examination not only gives you the various papers in each tier, but also gives you the mark distribution and duration in each paper.
Combined Graduate Level exam pattern: For all posts except Statistical Investigators Gr.II & Compiler: Total 700 marks. For the posts of Statistical Investigators Gr.II & Compiler: Total 900 marks.
Hope above information on Combined Graduate Level exam pattern helps you in sizing up the exam and prepare for it accordingly. Since major changes has been brought about by SSC in 2010, further changes are unlikely to happen in at least next 2/3 years. Therefore if you are appearing in Combined Graduate Level exam 2011 or 2012, you can be sure about the above exam pattern to be continued as exam pattern of Combined Graduate Level exam 2011/2012. Please keep visiting this blog, as I intend to bring out the study materials for Combined Graduate Level exam in a subsequent blog post. Labels: SSC Exams |
