QA Funda through Handa Ka Funda

October 04, 2009

Quantitative Aptitude (QA) happens to be one prime tool used by Academicians & Recruiters alike for gauging the mental faculty of a prospective student/employee. I found through careful analysis of the entrance/recruitment exams over a period of close to two years of my blogging career that QA section is all pervasive – you just can not escape from it!

You can also check this yourself through my following blog posts on exam pattern analysis of entrance/recruitment exams:
Bank Exam pattern analysis: Similarity in Bank Exams
ATMA VS. MAT – A comparative analysis

Above are just few samples of the exam pattern and if you dig more, you would find more of such exam patterns in which you would find that Quantitative Aptitude (QA) section contributes from 20% to 25% of total questions (and hence total marks) being asked in these competitive exams – although it may be asked in different flavors such as Numerical Aptitude, Numerical reasoning etc.

So how do you prepare for such an important exam section as QA?
There are tools: online sample papers & books for QA, which I have been posting from time to time, specific to that entrance/recruitment exams exam.

In addition to above, I would like to introduce you to a very good tool now made available by Ravi Handa (B. Tech/M. Tech in CS from IITKGP) and now a QA faculty at IMS Kolkata. He along with two other friends have put up a video-tutorial website: www.handakafunda.com.

The content is entirely free (save for a 15 second free registration) and as per them the objective for putting up the website is two fold:
1) To aid students in adapting to online preparations for the exams.
2) To help the students who cannot go to a regular coaching class.

On being invited by Ravi to review the site, I found the site to be very focused – dealing with a single exam section called "Quantitative Aptitude". QA has again been categorized into five sub-sections: Number System, Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry & Modern Maths. In each of these five sub-sections, you have tutorials on exam topics (such as Time Speed Distance, Time & Work in Arithmetic section) – averaging about two videos on each tutorial.

The video content is extremely good and is very specific. Even an average person like me could understand the topics which seemed so difficult as the following two videos on "Reminder Theorem" would show:

Besides, the online video tutorial, handakafunda site also has a very active web-Forum, where I found queries posted by students are invariably being replied by QA experts.

If you would like to grow your QA basics, handakafunda is a very good tool. Hope you would visit the site and comment upon the same here or by mail to handa@handakafunda.com.

Theory of polynomials, solutions of quadratic equations, relation between its roots and coefficients (Only real roots to be considered). Simultaneous linear equations in two unknowns-analytical and graphical solutions. Simultaneous linear equations in two variables and their solutions. Practical problems leading to two simultaneous linear equations or inequations in two variables or quadratic equations in one variable & their solutions. Set language and set notation, Rational expressions and conditional identities, Laws of indices.

TRIGONOMETRY:
Sine x, cosine x, Tangent x when 00 < x =" 00," style="font-weight: bold;">GEOMETRY:
Lines and angles, Plane and plane figures, Theorems on (i) Properties of angles at a point (ii) Parallel lines, (iii) Sides and angles of a triangle, (iv) Congruency of triangles, (v) Similar triangles, (vi) Concurrence of medians and altitudes, (vii) Properties of angles, sides and diagonals of a parallelogram, rectangle and square (viii) Circles and its properties including tangents and normals, (ix) Loci.

In addition to the interview the candidates will be put to Intelligence Tests both verbal and non-verbal, designed to assess their basic intelligence. They will also be put to Group Tests such as group discussions, group planning, outdoor group tasks, and asked to give brief lectures on specified subjects. All these tests are intended to judge the mental calibre of a candidate. In broad terms, this is really an assessment of not only his intellectual qualities but also his social traits and interests in current affairs.

The CDS syllabus posted here is for CDS-2010 exam. But this syllabus is hardly likely to change and hence can be used as the reference syllabus for CDS-2011/CDS-2012 exam also.
