ISRO Scientist/Engineers Exam pattern/Papers/Books

August 28, 2009

ISRO exam datesJust a few days back, I received a mail from Sandy Smith appreciating this blog as well as asking me to throw more light on Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) recruitment exams for Scientist/Engineers:

ISRO Exam Notification"Firstly I would like to congratulate you for running career quips. This one really stands apart from the chaos of carrer exams sites out there as most of them are just poor forums with no responsible admin.

Second I would request you to add a new category about the annual exam conducted by ISRO to recruit scientists/engineers.As you can observe(try googling "ISRO JOBS"),there is a dearth of information relating to this exam with no sources about dates, study material and all kind of info you generally give about other exams.Even ISRO's home page fails to clarify the various aspects of this prestigious exam.
So kindly give it a thought.
With thanks
"

It is for him and people like him who wants to join ISRO that I dedicate this blog article. Sandy was very correct in saying that information on ISRO exam pattern as well as how to prepare for the same is very limited and confusing. I had a hard time finding the materials below, compiled from different websites. Hope you would find the study materials useful.

What is ISRO?
How prestigious an organisation is ISRO can be gauged from the fact that none other than the Prime Minister of this country is at its helm, as you can find from this Organisational Chart!

You can know about more about this very prestigious organisation from this “About us” page of ISRO website.

ISRO recruitment notification for Scientist/Engineers:
Every year, ISRO recruits candidates with BE/B. Tech qualifications from the branches of ISRO Exam BooksElectronics, Mechanical & Computer Science engineering for the post of Scientist/Engineers. When does the ISRO recruitment notification for Scientist/Engineers come out? I just did some analysis on previous three years ISRO recruitment notification for Scientist/Engineers and have come out with the following information:

ISRO notification for recruitment in 2007:
Date for application was: From 09.02.2007 to 05.03.2007.

ISRO notification for recruitment in 2008:
Date for application was: From 18/02/2008 to 14/03/2008.
Date of exam: 4th May 2008.

ISRO notification for recruitment in 2009:
Date for application was: From 10/02/2009 to 12/03/2009
Date of exam: 26th April 2009.

With above date trends for ISRO notification, you can expect the ISRO recruitment notification 2010 for Scientist/Engineers to come out in the first/second week of February 2010 and alike dates for the ISRO recruitment -2011. Like-wise, ISRO written exam should be held in the last week of April/1st week of May 2010.

Which website should you check for the ISRO notification as well as ISRO results?
Check in this webpage. You can also try in this main ISRO recruitment/result page.

ISRO Eligibilities for Scientist/Engineers:
What are the eligibilities required by ISRO for the post of Scientist/Engineers?
Well, you need to be a first class BE/B.Tech or equivalent with a minimum aggregate of 65% (average of all semesters for which results are available). Final year students can also apply, provided the results are declared within 31st August of that year.

Next, your age should be maximum 35 years as on the last date of application (for example for ISRO recruitment-2009, 12/03/09). Age relaxations exists as per Govt. rule.

ISRO Salaries for Scientist/Engineers:
The gross salary offered by ISRO for these Scientist/Engineers positions is approximately Rs.24,360/- p.m.

How to apply for ISRO recruitment Scientist/Engineers:
You can apply only online!
But even before going to apply online, you need to have following two things ready:
1.0 A valid e-mail id – for all correspondence with ISRO.
2.0 Demand draft (DD) for the ISRO application fee which in ISRO-2009 exam was Rs.100/- from any of the Nationalized Bank to be drawn in favour of the Sr. Accounts Officer, ISRO HQ, Bangalore, payable at Bangalore.
You need to enter these details in the ISRO Online form.

After you submit your online application, an on-line Registration Number. ISRO also sends you your Roll no. for the ISRO written exam in your e-mail id. The same can be used for finding your application status as well as ISRO exam results.

ISRO Exam pattern for Scientist/Engineers:
This was the most difficult thing to find – I was not able to find any single website which gives the ISRO Exam picture in totality, let alone the ISRO exam notification, which says only this much about the ISRO selection process: there would be a written test, followed by interview for those shortlisted from the written test.

However, based on the feedback posted in different web forums, the exam pattern of ISRO written test was found as follows
Total questions: 80
Time: 90 minutes
Marking: +3 for correct answer -1 for wrong.
There is only one section and the questions would be your branch-specific.

Is there any syllabus for ISRO exam?
No. No syllabus has been prescribed by ISRO for the written test. But most of the people who appeared in the ISRO written test and left feedback on these forums said that GATE exam syllabus can be used in your preparation for the ISRO written test as well as for the interview. The questions asked were reported to be conceptual and therefore, you have to dig your basics in your area of specialization.

Study materials for ISRO written exam for Scientist/Engineers:
I had searched internet for the ISRO exam online sample papers/books and could find out some model papers, but the standard of these papers were poor and you have to take them with a pinch of salt:ISRO Exam Syllabus

ISRO exam questions from geekinterview.com

Since there is dearth of authentic online sample papers for the ISRO exam, I would advise you to use the GATE study materials for preparation of the ISRO exam.

ISRO Interview questions:
Questions asked in the ISRO interview can be divided into following three broad areas:
1.0 Warming up questions about yourself:
To prepare for these questions, take help of the “Interview” section of this blog – post which gives you nuances of an interview along with 99 most common interview questions.

2.0 About ISRO as an organisation and its various space programs:
To prepare for these questions, read the “About us” page of ISRO website.

3.0 Conceptual questions from your own branch of engineering, with questions on your final year project.
Help yourself with the preparations you made for the written tests.

You can take a sneak peek just to have an idea about ISRO interview questions from the following forum post on the interview experience of am ISRO examinee:
ISRO interview questions: from 123eng.com

Hope I have been able to do justice to provide you some information on ISRO written exam for Scientist/Engineers as well as the interview. I would be on the lookout for more and would post the same as and when I can spot them. So visit me again!

The virtuous Mizos and the beautiful Mizoram

August 22, 2009

Career Quips is a career blog, which makes in-depth studies on career exams and provides the job-hunters with study materials for preparation of the same. In last two years of existence, this blog has never published any non-career article.

However I feel even the most-hungry-for-job candidate also needs a break from job-hunting and therefore this travelogue is being written as a weekend reading! I also could not help writing about such a good place I visited and the good people I met, for I feel all the world should know about them…

This paradise on earth is Mizoram (in North East India) and the good people I talk about is - the Mizos. For the last one year, my official commitment takes me through the serpentine roads of Mizo hills and I would like to just share with you the three counts of virtues I found in these people.

First: The eternal lover:
You would be surprised to know that Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram has its own Tajmahal – a pure white marble monument, built by K. Chhawnthuama in memory of his late wife Rosanpuii Varte, who expired on November 27, 2001 in a motor accident. The monument stands tall and beautiful in a serene environment in Durtlang, just in the outskirt of Aizwal town.

Fresh flowers are laid each day in memory of her and her dresses have been kept in such a way as if the same were worn only yesterday. If you happen to be in Aizawl, this Tajmahal, named KV Paradise is a place you should visit!

Second: The disciplined man:
This may sound to you as stupid when I say you that Mizo people does not honks!
Yes, it is almost a sin to blare your car horn in Mizoram. When you are on the road, you would find complete discipline being maintained by each and every driver – there is no rash overtaking, cars in fact would stop to let you pass by in the narrow hill roads..

Third: The honest man who believes in others honesty:
I encountered this most out of the world experience on my last visit on 12th August, 2009 - I could not believe what I saw then and neither does anyone now, to whom I narrate this story..
I found a vegetable shop, with self-service system, just like modern malls. The only difference is:there is no shop-keeper here! And no body is watching you what you bought and how much you paid! This shop is in wilderness, in the deserted road from Aizawl to Lunglei via Kulikawn, in a bus-shed called “Middle Lau Sailam”, about 2 hour away from Aizawl.

The items on sale are vegetables like brinjals, ginger also fruits etc., each of them packaged in poly-pack, with each pack costing you Rs. 10/=. You are supposed to pick items you like (i.e. in multiples of Rs.10/=) and insert the money into the cash-box (a small plastic container). The cash-box is out in the open and is so small that anyone can just put it inside his pocket – but here no body does that! It is said that the owner of the shop hardly finds a variation of more than Rs.10/= per month!

There is at least one more good story to tell you about the virtues of Mizo people – about how a helpless colleague of mine, stuck mid-road because of car-breakdown at night was helped… but that should be another weekend reading!

Till than I leave you with some breathtaking view of Mizoram in the pictures above and also a You-tube video on how the clouds caress you in Mizoram! So long!

Test of Reasoning: Sample Question papers & Books

August 15, 2009

Test of reasoning occupies a prime place of importance in most of the job recruitment exams as well as in many college entrance exams these days. Name any recruitment exams and you would almost invariably find a paper on test of reasoning. Same is the case with the entrance exams of many top notch colleges. The only difference between test of reasoning held for these exams is that, more renowned an organisation/college is, tougher would be the questions asked.

This blog post is therefore dedicated to finding out what is test of reasoning as well as to find those online sample papers and preparatory books for test of reasoning.
