|
|
This blog post follows my earlier blog article on RRB Chennai: RRB Chennai Job-2009: Notification/Eligibility/Forms and tells you where to find the online form for RRB Chennai exam and how to apply.
Why should you apply online for RRB Chennai? If you ask me above question for my personal preference, I would have still chosen to apply online only for RRB Chennai (or for that matter any other exam). Why? Because, I can do it anytime within the last date from the cool comfort of home/school/office/cyber cafe. Secondly, there is almost nil chances of me filling the form wrongly, since online form would prompt me for entering the data correctly. For example, in the online RRB Chennai form, it is only when you chose “Employee Notice Number” drop box, that “Category Group” drop box becomes selectable.
Thirdly and most importantly, I would be able to view the status of my application online by using my online registration number or by entering my name and D.O.B after 45 days of closure of notification.
What if I do not know anything about internet? I would have taken the help of a net-savvy friend!
So why should I not fill the form online?
Before going to apply online for RRB Chennai exam, have followings ready: 1.0 Demand Draft / IPO for Exam fees appropriate to the category you are applying. These details you need to enter in the form as shown in following screenshot.
2.0 Printer should be attached to the computer to take print out of the online form at the end of submission of the form. 3.0 Your recent photograph (in JPEG, JPG or GIF format) for uploading. Read this FAQ on RRB Chennai online form for more details.
If you have above ready, than click here to visit RRB Chennai home page, on which click at the button "Click Here for Online Registration" as shown below:
You are than shown the page for online application procedure and than the online form as shown below:
After filling the form online, you need to take print out of the same and send it with requisite enclosures to RRB Chennai, within the last date!

SSB Interview and how to prepare
|
|
March 12, 2009
|
|
|
|
This blog post follows an earlier post on IAF career (flying branch) for graduates, in which the eligibility and how to apply is discussed in detail. The focus of this blog post is on telling you what is the selection process in SSB (Services Selections Board) interview, so that you can psyche yourself up for that.
Although this post has been made immediately after IAF (flying branch) job notification for graduates, even the aspirants from defence exams like NDA/CDS/ IAF (FTS) etc. and for other wings of defence services (i.e. Army & Navy) and IAF non-Flying branches (Technical & Ground duty) should also find the content useful to know what is a SSB interview and how to prepare for the same.
Subsequent to scrutiny of your application, if you are found eligible, you would be called for the selection test in any of the three Air Force Selection Boards (AFSB), located at Dehradun, Mysore & Varanasi. You would be paid the Traveling allowance (To & Fro cost) for it.
Upon arriving at the AFSB, you have to undergo the SSB selection test, which consists of a two stage selection process: Stage-1 & Stage-2, followed by Medical Examination. Day-wise selection process can be found from following graphics:
As seen from above, the selection process is elaborate, continuing till 6 days. Let us know more of these selection tests individually.
Stage-I SSB Test: It consists of Pilot Aptitude Battery Test (PABT), followed by Personality Tests.
What is PABT? It is a series of aptitude test, which tests your aptitude to become a pilot. PABT comprises of three tests: Instrument Battery Test (INSB): It is a paper pencil test, in which you would need to read and interpret the dials (like altitude meters, speedometer, tilt meter etc.) of an instrument panel of an aircraft and answer about 30 objective questions within 20 minutes.
Sensory Motor Apparatus Test (SMA) & Control Velocity Test (CVT): Both of these are machine tests, which measures the psychomotor co-ordination skill of the individual.
Sensory Motor Apparatus Test (SMA): These are like video games, in which you are made to sit in a cockpit like instrument, with a monitor in front, paddles on your feet and a joystick on your hand. As soon as the test starts, a small square would appear on the centre of the monitor and a small ball would keep moving/oscillating. You can move the ball right by pressing your right paddle, left by left paddle, up by moving joystick towards you and down by moving joystick away from you. Your goal is to keep the ball within the square for maximum amount of time. But as soon as you bring the ball within the square, it comes out and you have to bring it back again. In the midst of all this, a beep sound would come randomly for 2 second and you have to press the button on top of the joystick within this 2 second, for which you get bonus scores.
In Control Velocity Test (CVT), a small ball (aprox. 5mm dia) would appear on the monitor and similar balls would flow across screen from random directions. Your goal is to overlap your ball with maximum number of the flowing balls.
You are adequately briefed by the SSB examiners on every aspect of PABT test and you are also encouraged to ask questions whenever you have a doubt. As you can find from above, PABT test is very enjoyable and you would find it a fun to appear in the PABT test.
However, there is a catch! You can appear in PABT only once in your lifetime and hence if you are serious of becoming a pilot, use this only chance..
Do you need any practice for PABT? Not a must, as your pure reflexes are tested. But some familiarization would make you confident. For this, just visit any good video parlor with good video games..
If you had applied for only IAF flying branches career, and you fail at PABT, all you have to do is pack your baggage and go back. But if you had applied for a joint defence career (like NDA/CDS etc.), you would be asked to stay back and complete the rest of the selection test, as you may be found suitable for Army, Navy or for non-flying branches of IAF (i.e. Technical & Ground).
Stage-1 SSB Psychological Test: The SSB Psychological Test tries to find the inner person in you - your positive attitude, power of analysis (understanding a complex situation), decisiveness etc. For this SSB puts before you a series of test, in which time limit given is short, so that you can not fabricate your responses to impress SSB examiners. Some of the tests are given below:
Sentence forming: You be shown word in quick succession and you would be asked to form a sentence on the words shown. Time limit is short – hardly 5/10 second per word and scarcely can anyone make a full sentence. But out of whatever you write, SSB examiners would judge you. Words shown may be like: study, violence, defence, nuclear etc..
Situation Reaction Test: You would be give some situations and asked to write your responses for the same. e.g. You have gone abroad and lost your purse, what would you do?
Thematic Appreciation Test: You would be shown pictures – say a picture of classroom full of students with a teacher sitting at the corner and a student with chalk at the blackboard in which there is a picture of a rope. You are asked to write a short story (even a paragraph does) on the picture.
After going through the PABT & Stage-1 SSB Psychological Test, if you are found suitable, you are asked to stay back for Stage-2 SSB Tests, which is common for all the services wings – Army, Navy & Airforce (both flying/non-flying). In this, you are tested to gauge whether you have the Officer Like Qualities (OLQ), as it is called in defence parlance.
Stage-2 SSB Psychological Test: These are very similar to Stage-1 SSB Psychological Test.
Stage-2 SSB Group Test: The group test is aimed at finding your team-work capabilities – whether you can lead a team and also whether you can be a team player, when some one else is a team leader.
The group tests involves Group Discussions as well as outdoor group tasks. You may be familiar with GD and hence I am not elaborating on the same.
Outdoor group tasks involves such a game as below: You are the leader of a team of 7 fellow aspirants. There are some vehicle tires on the ground laid randomly. You are given two wooden planks and your team is asked to cross all these tires, by placing the planks on top of the tires in such a way that the planks or anyone of you do not touch the ground, as land-mines might have been laid on the ground.
Stage-2 SSB Interview: This is a direct conversation between you and the interviewer and you would be asked pertinent questions. As you need to impress the interviewer on your eagerness to join the services, may be you should update yourself on defence knowledge’s.
After SSB Interview, SSB examiners of Psychological Test, Group Test, Interview gets together and hold a conference, where your potentialities are discussed. At the end of it, if you are found suitable, your name is recommended for joining the services.
The result of the SSB interview is declared on the last day. If you are selected, you have to undergo the Medical Examination.
These are just some tests which I can recollect of my own SSB Interview experience way back in May of 1986. On interacting with concerned persons and also researching on the net, I find that not much has changed since than.
Do you need any preparation for SSB Interview? I would definitely say yes, as some familiarization with the topics would help you prove your actual potentialities. Therefore, I recommend following books for preparation for SSB Interview.
Recommend books for SSB Interview:
I found following books good for preparation of for SSB Interview.
