SBI Probationary Officers (PO) Exam – What is it, Eligibility & Selection process:

July 20, 2008

State Bank of India has advertised recently for recruitment of 3500 Probationary officers. This is an excellent job opportunity for a fresher, since no experience is sought. The aim of this blog post is to acquaint you with what is a SBI Probationary Officers Exam, eligibility and the Selection process. In the subsequent posts, I would delve deeper more into how to apply it, the exam pattern of SBI Probationary Officers Exam, along with some solved question papers.

For that at first let us know SBI as an organization:

State Bank of India (SBI) is the largest bank in India and is the second largest bank in the world (by the number of branch offices). It has got more than 10,000 branches and a further 4000+ associate bank branches. The bank has the largest ATM (5600+) network in the country.

SBI is also present in 32 countries abroad, with 84 offices serving the international customers. It is ranked at 380 in 2008 Fortune Global 500 list, and ranked 219 in 2008 Forbes Global 2000.

With above credentials of SBI, you must be pretty interested to join it. Is not it?

Who is a SBI Probationary Officer?
SBI recruits a huge number of officers called Probationary Officers (PO) every year in the month of September-October. Depending on the performance, a PO can aspire someday to become the chairman of this big organisation.

Initial salary of a SBI Probationary Officers (PO):
At present, initial monthly emoluments of Probationary Officers, including D.A., H.R.A. and C.C.A., are approximately Rs. 16,850/- at Metropolitan centers. The bank also offers perquisites such a HTC/LFC, Provident Fund/ Pension, Medical aid for self and dependents etc.

SBI Probationary Officers Exam – 2008 schedule:

Main (Tier-II) Exam : 30.11.2008 (Sunday)

Group Discussion & Interview:
Only the candidates who qualify the Main (Tier-II) Exam will be notified of date & venue for the final Group Discussion and Interview.

Vacancies for SBI Probationary Officers Exam – 2008:

(a) Educational Qualifications:

SC/ST/PWD Candidates - Min. 55% in class XII and 50% in Graduation or PG.

Computer Literacy - Proficiency in computer (Certificate from a reputed Institute or having computer as a subject in class XII or Graduation).

(b) Age Limit:

Relaxation in the Upper Age Limit to Reserve category:
3 years for OBC, 5 years for SC/ST candidates & Ex-servicemen.

(c) Number of attempts:
If you are a General category candidate, than you can attempt for a maximum of 3 times provided you fulfill other criteria. However this restriction is not there for any other categories (SC/ST/OBC).

Selection Process for SBI Probationary Officers Exam:
The selection is conducted through a three-tier selection process:
Tier-I : Preliminary Exam: 2 hour duration (objective type examination)
Tier-II : Mains Exam : 3 hour duration (objective type - 2 hour, Descriptive type-1 hour)
Tier-III : Group Discussion & Interview.

Tier-I (Preliminary Exam) is a screening examination only. You need to secure minimum 40th percentile in each of the four tests (Test of Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude, General Awareness/Computer Knowledge, English Language) in the preliminary examination and also need to score an aggregate 40% (35% for SC/ST/PWD) marks to be invited for the main test (Tier II).

How many candidates from Tier-I reaches Tier-II?
Generally for General/OBC - 15 times the vacancy and for SC/ST/PWD-20 times the vacancy is called for the Tier-II (Mains Exam). Say as the vacancy is 3500 for the 2008 exam: 52,500 General/OBC candidates & 70,000 SC/ST/PWD would be called to the Mains Exam, provided that there is deserving candidates for each category.

In Tier-II (Mains Exam), you need to score minimum 40th percentile in each of the four objective type tests (Test of Reasoning, Data Analysis and Interpretation, Marketing Knowledge, Test of English Language) and in the descriptive paper with aggregate 40% (35% for SC/ST/PWD) marks. You also need to be ranked sufficiently high in main examination to be called for the Tier-II exam (Group Discussion and Interview).

How many candidates from Tier-II reach Tier-III?
Generally, three times the vacancy in each category is called for the Tier-III exam. Say as the vacancy is 3500 for the 2008 exam: SC-1575, ST-786, OBC-2835, Gen-5304 (total 10,500) candidate would reach Tier-III.

In Tier-III (Group Discussion and Interview), you need to score minimum 40% (35% for SC/ST/PWD) aggregate marks i.e. Group Discussion and Interview put together to be eligible for selection.

How is the final list of successful candidates decided?
Candidates will have to pass both in Tier II & Tier III for final selection as given above.
Thereafter, Tier II and Tier III marks will be aggregated and arranged in the descending order and depending on the vacancies; selection will be made from the top merit ranked candidates in each category.
Results of the candidates who are finally selected is made available on the SBI website.

Your competition would be among PH category only, so definitely you would have advantage (specially in during Interview stage) because you are from so good a college as SRCC, DU.

And as your are from SRCC, I think you should aim higher than SBI!

    Best wishes

    hi prasantha,
can u give us any idea wen will results of 30 nov exam out?

according to me cut-offs would b:
    reasoning= 12-13
    DI= 15-16
    English= 19-20
    marketing= 24-25

if anybody has diffrent opinion please share it.......

  • At December 2, 2008 at 5:17 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

    Ranjit,
i think that the cut-off of DI will be in the range 12-14 only. as the questions had extensive calculation compared to previous papers,cut-off may come down.

    Hi Everybody,

Do you have any idea about the cut-off for the Reasoning section? I am also concerned whether the number of vacancies remains 3500 as only close to 17,000 candidates were shortlisted for the Tier-II exam.

    Looking forward to your response....

does anyone have a clear idea on the cutoffs in DI & Reasoning sections? i think DI is very much calculation intesive and for that matter Reasoning too was not a cakewalk.each question required a deeper look and the options were also misleading.I think the cutoffs in these two sectios won't be too high but iam not very much sure..if anyone who wrote mains exam earlier/last time pls give us some idea on the probable cutoffs...

  • At December 5, 2008 at 3:36 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

The cutoff will be 20 marks, that is 40 percentile in each section whether the required 3500 posts are filled or not. I have experience in SBI Associates main exam, even though the posts advertised were 750, only 200 odd qualified in the main exam.

  • At December 5, 2008 at 10:02 AM, Blogger raghavan said…

i dont know with what name i should call you.. as you are anonymous..anyways you are wrong..40 percentile means 0.4 times the topper's marks not 0.4 times 50 = 20.. 20 is 40% of 50 not 40 percentile of 50.

  • At December 5, 2008 at 10:17 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

    Hi Raghavan,

What according to you should be the cut-off for reasoning and DI

  • At December 5, 2008 at 10:55 AM, Blogger adi said…

ya 40 percentile is 0.4 times the highest marks and not 40%50 which is 20.and that is the reason we have to guess the cutoffs otherwise they would have been fixed at 20 without taking into account the difficulty level of the paper which is not appropriate. The cutoffs would vary depending on the exam and the marks secured by the candidates and they are not fixed.

  • At December 5, 2008 at 12:28 PM, Anonymous sanju said…

well said Adi !!! this is wat many ppl dont even know abt. u hav any idea abt wen d result wil b published? by-the-by, how was d exam 4 u?

  • At December 5, 2008 at 2:09 PM, Anonymous Prasanta said…

i think the qualifying marks will be 40 % of the total marks, not 40 percentile. Although i sincerely hope that it is not 40 % of the total marks as the paper (especially DI) was tough. Anyways how was the exam papers of all of u?

  • At December 5, 2008 at 2:44 PM, Blogger adi said…

i felt reasoning and DI both were of medium level difficulty-i mean the time management became difficult for me for DI and the problems also required lot of calculations.I attempted around 30-32 in each of DI and Reasoning sections.Actually i didn't prepare well for the exam since i was busy with some other work.So i was not very much satisfied.but did the descriptive paper well.50-50 chance for me to clear the exam.how abt all of you? had enough time to do more than 35-40 ques in DI ?

  • At December 5, 2008 at 3:29 PM, Blogger Ashwani said…

hi guys, first of all the paper was tough as compared to earlier exam, but still the rule clearly states 40% in each section & not "percentile", therefore one must score atleast 20 in each section.i feel cutt offs would stay there looking at the toughness of exam.results generally take 2-3 months 2 be declared. so all the best people!!!!

  • At December 5, 2008 at 4:31 PM, Anonymous sandhya said…

    hello adi
you said u din't prepare well but u attempted a gud no of questions in DI..as it was really calculation intensive..i cud attempt only 25 ques..reasoning n marketing i did gud n so-so in english ,did well in descriptive but i still hope.. i set a chance, wat about all others xam???
anyways best of luck to u all...

  • At December 5, 2008 at 7:36 PM, Blogger adi said…

actually in the advertisement it was given that one needs to "score minimum 40th percentile in each of the objective tests(i.e Reasoning,DI,MKT knowledge,English)and in the descriptive paper with aggregate 40%(35% for SC/ST/PWD) marks". So, i think it means to score min 40 percentile in each section and 40 percentage in aggregate that means (40%250 i.e 200 objective+50 descriptive which is 100 marks). So one should get atleast 100 marks out 250 with a minimum of 40 percentile in each section which depends on the highest marks of that section and not 20.I think this assumption is probably correct and pls give ur opinions on this.

  • At December 5, 2008 at 7:51 PM, Anonymous prasanta said…

I went through the information handput of SBI. 40 % is only for the Descriptive paper. For the objective test, the examination board will set the mininum qualifying marks based upon the performance of the candidates. I have attempted 30 questions in the objective test with 95 % accuracy. I hope i would get through. Best of luck to all.

  • At December 5, 2008 at 7:57 PM, Blogger adi said…

hi prasanta ..how many u attempted in total? i hope u mean 30 in each section rite? All the best to evryone..i think it would take minimum 50 days to publish the result.let us wait and see..

  • At December 6, 2008 at 4:18 PM, Anonymous prasanta said…

Hi Adi, i have attempted 30 in each section. the result will probably be declared in jan last. keep in touch.

  • At December 10, 2008 at 6:05 PM, Blogger alok said…

hi guys , why is there so much of confusion on percentile. the paper has a sectional cutt off at 40th percentile and an total cuttoff at 40 percentage. it means that you have to be above 40% of the guys in each section and the total shud b more than 100/250. any clue when r the results gonna be announced.

  • At December 11, 2008 at 2:22 PM, Blogger Ashwani said…

forget bout cutt off guys, they r only going to call a limited number of people for interview. My guess is that it will be a ratio of 1:2 which means about 10500 students will be called for interview, so even if one clears the cut off he/she has 2 be in top 10500 to be eligible 2 be called for interview.so just relax and wait for result. As it is the exam is over and nothin is in our hands.so chill.

Hi friend, great to see your comments on this site for the first time. I am also joining u as i was also a part of this test held on 30.11.08. I have attempted all in marketing, 32 in English, 30 in reasoning and 35 in DA. I am expecting postive result and hope you will also get positive result.

  • At December 11, 2008 at 6:33 PM, Blogger adi said…

rightly said ashwani..yes they will call only a requisite number of people which the bank decides based on a several criteria like the no.of vacancies ,marks in the exam, reservations so on and so forth.Since the exam is already over there is nothing we can do abt it except to have hope and keep our fingers crossed while waiting for the results.

  • At December 11, 2008 at 6:36 PM, Blogger mukesh said…

Hi ashwani, i am not agree with u about the selection of 10500 candidates. As in the Po test of associate banks, there was 750 post and they made selection of only 201 candidates for Interview.I think firstly we have to qualify for each section after that our aggregate must be 40 % or more only then we can qualify.

hello friends i also took d test for po ( mains ) , to me it was pretty tough . frankly speaking more than 20 in each section is a very good work done by an individual !!! english and marketing were good ( but not EASY ), any body who felt like me and are hoping hard to score 80 in aggregate ?? do share ur thoughts

    Hi,

    Happy New Year to all.

Any idea about when the results will be declared? My attempts:

    English: 30
    Marketing: 30
    Logical Reasoning: 23
    DI: 20

    Waiting for expert comments.

    My attempt was:
    Reasoning:26-28(don remember exactly)
    English:30+
    Marketing:49
    DI:10-12

I expect the following cut off:
    Reasoning:19-22
    English:20-23
    Marketing:25-30
    DI:12-15
I think i will miss out coz of DI :(

  • At January 7, 2009 at 8:26 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Do you really think the cut-off for reasoning would be around 19-22? I found some questions to be too time consuming.

  • At January 7, 2009 at 2:01 PM, Blogger santy said…

wel...if they want to avoid crowding...most probably yes the cut off will be around 19 for Reasoning...n if they stick to 40 percentile criteria then cut off may fall to 16-18...thts wht i think. lets see wht they actually do.

i already have mentioned abt my attempts above.and as far as preparation is concerned...i was only worried about the general awareness part , luckily there were sufficient questions from computers. before Tier I i went thru R S Agarwal's Quantitative Aptitude and found it perfect for PO exams. i went through all d formulas, which i felt i had forgotten and solved atleast 1 question over that.also to know the pattern(it was my first attempt of any kind of PSU exams) i went thru a few previously asked papers (especially GA). If one has prepared for Tier I sincerely, then for Tier II he/she should practice for DI . Thats the only part, i felt, need lots of practice. English is something which one should keep grooming through out, not only from examination point of view but otherwise also.
If anyone need some specific information please feel free to ask.
Lastly, i would suggest that do not compare yourself with any one, every time u try to give ur best and u will b ahead of many.
    All D Bst !!!!

    my attempts
    Mktng knowledge-> 43-45
    English-> 37
    DI-> 24
    DS->28

i feel in these kind of exams, accuracy is more important than the number of attempts. If u attempt 49 out of 50 and if 40 are wrong then there is no use of attempting that many questions.instead if u attempt 35 with 90% accuracy , then u will have a greater chance of getting selected.i followed this method and it worked rightly for me.As i had said previously, i didnt prepare for the exam and this is my first bank exam. I was a Software Engineer then but now iam not working as i had to quit my job since there were no projects.Lastly,my opinion is If u have ur basics strong, and follow a good strategy i think anyone can easily crack the exam.

thnks Prasanta ..ur blogs are really helpful for PO aspirants..they are very gud indeed. But i feel it would be more helpful if someone posts their previous GD/Interview experiences in SBI or in any other bank for that matter or is it possible for you upload some previous interview experiences in SBI ? by the way , did u appear/or cleared any PO exams?

  • At January 17, 2009 at 10:36 PM, Blogger Prasanta Bora said…

    Sandhya,
No! I myself have never appeared in any PO exam so far..
But my hobby is picking up info about various career exams from net, books, journals and post the same in concise manner, so as to help job aspirants.

By the way, I think SBI GD TOPICs should not be very different from the ones in ICICI PO - they should be Case Study Type GD topic, as I had mentioned in
    this blog post
    ....

But do not worry much about GD's.. if you do not know anything, try to speak towards the middle/last, by picking up knowledge about it.

In the initial phases of GD, show your activeness in team-building.. that is infact the most sought after criteria in GD..

    Hope this helps!

    mrktng-20+

even then am selected for tier III.
congrats to all those selected for the same.

I dint get one thing.for sbi associate tier 3 ,only 200 ppl were called though vacancies were 751 and out of them finally only 70 ppl were selecetd.

I think those left out vacancies (751 vacancies-69 filled) will also be added to current sbi 3500 vacancies.this I am expecting keeping in view the CONSENT letter given to us for choosing SB associate in order of prefernece.

what do u say? arent our chances brighter?. anyway best wishes to one & all.

    Do anyone know

    1. Will SBI check the given references and verify the
    reliability of our information?

    or

    2. Will SBI call the given references, and get their
    testimonial about us?

    or

    3. Will SBI get a formal report on us from the references?

What they actually do with the references. What the
    information is used for?

We may keep our references informed on this.

    Hi Friends,

Pl let me know is the Probationary Officer Job target based and very pressurizing. Is it into sales & Marketing

  • At April 6, 2009 at 4:48 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

well the job of a PO is not that target oriented n there is some pressure though.. the job of PO in the first 2 yrs deals with different jobs or lets say a PO is made to work whenever or where ever it is required. so basically it involves lot of training in all the different work done in bank... so far there r no strict sales n markting for u to do as per my knowledge.......if anyone knows more then post it.
